The igniter is the most commonly defective part for a gas oven that won't turn on. The igniter has two main functions. First, the igniter draws electrical current through the oven safety valve to open it. Second, the igniter gets hot enough to glow and ignite the gas in the burner assembly. If the igniter gets weak, it will fail to open the safety valve correctly. If the valve does not open, the oven will not heat. To determine if the igniter is defective, observe the igniter when the oven is on. If the igniter glows for more than 90 seconds without igniting the gas flame, this indicates that the igniter is too weak to open the valve. If the igniter is weak, replace it. If the igniter does not glow at all, use a multimeter to test the igniter for continuity. If the igniter does not have continuity, replace it.

Oven does not light. Top ignitor glows red bottom

Since BOTH oven manifolds and surface burners are usually fed from the same source, this is probably the result of failed igniter(s) in the oven. This is assuming that your surface burners are working, or course. If you are trying to light the BAKE manifold, the broiler manifold is used on some model to speed up the pre-heat process. So, you may see the broiler attempt to light as well. If you have tried using only the broiler by itself and it still does not light, you may have a weak igniter on that manifold as well. Double check your symptoms.

If this is a GAS range, as these igniters age from repeated use, they can become weak and longer function. If you are experiencing ignition problems, the following link explains a little theory about how these igniters work and how to replace one:

The burner manifolds in the oven each use a glow bar or electrode type igniter with a gas safety valve to ignite. Both oven manifolds are controlled by the Electronic Oven Control (EOC) board, which is your clock/timer on the control panel. If the surface burners work, but the oven does not, the problem is usually not a gas related issue. It can be a control board issue, but is usually a weak or failed oven igniter.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

Prices vary between these sites, so shop and compare. The first three sites listed also offer helpful exploded view diagrams to help you locate and properly identify the parts you need.

If you have any questions please post back with a complete MODEL NUMBER and let me know. I hope this helps you.

GE XL44 Oven and stovetop work - broiler does not work

The broiler is the top element in the oven. Look at it. Bad ones sometimes have burnt into or have a melted spot. If it looks ok take it out by removing the screws at the back and pull the wires out a little and unplug the element. With an ohm meter it should show continuity. Replace it if any of these things apply.

Oven doesn't light. I have a Maytag MGR5750. The pre-heat light comes on but no ignition. Stove top burners work okay.

First thing to do is verify if the hot surface igniter or spark igniter is working. If the oven has a bottom broiler compartment then you can check from the bottom compartment. If it has a top broiler then you may need to remove the inner bottom cover inside the oven to look at the burner and igniter. Now turn on the oven and watch for the hot surface igniter to start to glow or the spark igniter to come on. If the igniter comes on then give the gas control valve(located at the bottom broiler/storage compartment) a tap with a wrench or a screwdriver. If the burner comes on then shut the oven back off and on several times COMPLETELY. If it works then you may have fixed the problem by dislodging debris in the valve. If it does not come back on then the gas control valve may be defective or the igniter could be weak. The igniter should be tested with a ohm meter and if it tests good(500-700 ohms usually) then the gas control valve will need to be replaced otherwise the igniter is bad. On spark ignition systems there is a different procedure. Another thing to check is the "runaway valve" that is located on the gas regulator for the range. It is a little lever located where the oven gas pipe comes off the regulator and cuts the gas to the burner when closed.

Sf195lehz5 free standing gas oven,

Check both gas valve solonoids for 216 ohms [blue broiler wire to the orange common and red oven wire to orange common] both must be ok.

Check oven temp sensor for 1080 ohms.

If above are ok then the problem is either the spark module or the control board.

Since the gas valve was not opening and there was not ignitor sound I replaced the spark module for about $90. You have a 50-50 chance of being right.

My range is relitively new and I'm haveing an oven light problem which I traced to the control board so I may replaced this board to for about $200.
