The machine was turning on and off so I removed the filter and washed it, left it to dry for 24 hours and replaced it.

The machine still cuts out intermittently however if the filter is lifted out about 1/4" it works perfectly (I haven't been using it like this)

Hi, it's Allan at Dyson.

I would recommend checking the door inlet flap to see if there is any debris obstructing or jamming the door partially closed. If so, it will be restricting the airflow and cause the motor to pulsate (pulsating is designed to reduce stress on the motor during a limited airflow).

If you continue to have difficulty, please give the Dyson Helpline a call on 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA), 0800 298 0298 (UK). Our experts will be happy to talk you through some further diagnostic checks when you have your machine easily to hand.

All the best,

Allan

How to clean the filter

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC28 has two washable filters engineered to last the lifetime of the machine in normal use. These should be washed at least once every 3-6 months as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for both filters to dry completely before replacing them in the machine.

I hope this helps. If you'd like further guidance you're welcome to give the Dyson Customer Helpline a call on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

If the filter is clogged would it quit working

Hi there! If the filter is clogged this will cause the vacuum to lose suction and possibly shut-off. Below are instructions to checking and cleaning your filters.

1. Remove the dirt cup. Twist off the dirt cup lid.
2. Remove the filter cartridge from dirt cup.
3. Separate the foam and cartridge filters. Wash foam filter under running. Allow 24 hours to air dry outside the vacuum.
4. Tap the excess dirt out of Hepa filter. Hepa filter may also be washed. Allow 24 hours to air dry.
5. Check the secondary filter by removing the filter cover from base. Rinse the foam filter under running water until it runs clear. Allow 24 hours to air dry.
6. The red baffle tube inside of the dirt cup is apart of the filtration of the vacuum and needs to be cleaned as well. Twist out the baffle tube by turning 1/4 turn clockwise. Remove any hair or debris wrapped around baffle tube. Baffle tube can be rinsed if needed. Allow to dry thoroughly.

If the filters are too dirty they may need to be replaced. With regular maintenance the filters should be replaced about once a year. Follow the links below to order replacement filters for your UH20020.

How to empty it

1. Push down on carry handle and
pull dirt container away from unit.

2. Once it is pulled back lift it out.

3. Hold dirt container over trash can and push down on bottom
release lever to release debris.

4. Close bottom cover on the dirt
cup until it snaps shut.

While you have the dirt container out you can also clean the Lifetime HEPA filter. It is on the top of the dirt container.

1. Twist lid to the left to remove lid and filter from
container

2. Remove foam filter from dirt container and dump out
any loose dirt. Wash the foam filter.

3. Remove the HEPA filter by Twist filter handle to the left and
pull out of lid. Wash the Heap filter.

4. Once the filters are thoroughly dry (I recommend set out for 24 hours) then installer filters in lid and thread back on top of the dirt canister.

Before replacing the dirt canister you can also clean the exhaust filter install below the dirt canister on the top vacuum cleaner head.

1. Loosen the exhaust grille by pressing the locking tab, and
remove it.

2. Remove and shake out the exhaust filter and wash it.
Note: Scented filter are not washable.

3. Once the filters are thoroughly dry relace it and snap the
exhaust grill into place.

Replace the dirt container
NOTE: Dirt container will not
align on base if filter is not
aligned properly.

It runs but not pick up dirt in cup

Hello! If the dirt is not entering into the dirt cup this could mean there is a clog in the vacuum or a filter that needs to be cleaned or replaced. Check that the brushes are still spinning. The vacuum has a brush-roll shut-off pedal on the right side of the cleaner if you are standing behind it. Below are simple instructions for checking your vacuum for clogs.

1. Remove the dirt cup. Twist off the dirt cup lid.

My dyson d14 animal keeps cutting in and out. When it's on, the hole above where the filter is, keeps making a loud suction noise and it won't clean up hair and dirt.

Vacuum Cleaners require AIr-Flow. Your machine is not getting any air-flow. The noise you hear is a valve opening up to prevent your machine from overheating and burning out the motor.
You probably have an obstruction somewhere in the machine. Dysons are kind of known for that in the vacuum cleaner world.
Check all air channels and clean them out. If that fixes the problem you still might have issues that caused it to clog up.

I posted the part second because it takes 24 hours to complete it.
Be sure you wash your Washable Pre-filter. It needs to dry for 24 hours. Never put it back in the machine wet.

Once it is completely dry reinstall the pre-filter and your machine should be back to normal operating functions.

Let me know f this helps.

How to fix blockage on DC24

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC24. From your description of the issue, it sounds as if your machine is shutting off because it's overheating. This may be due to a blockage, and the filters may also need a wash.

To locate and remove any blockages, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide:

http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc24/dc24-multi-floor/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-won-t-switch-on-or-cuts-out/my-machine-cut-out-whilst-i-was-using-it/how-to-remove-a-blockage/check-wand-and-hose-step-1

In normal use, the filters should be washed at least once a month, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for the filters to dry completely somewhere warm before replacing them.

This should resolve the issue, but if you'd like any further assistance or advice, please call us on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).

Best wishes,

Filters have been clogged with wet cat litter and now the vac will turn on but shuts off and wont cont to vaccume. can we clean/rinse the filter out. filter light has come on and then turns off once the...

Using a vacuum cleaner for wet cat litter??? Not a good idea at the best of times! The machine's cutting out because it's overheating. You don't tell us the make or model of your machine - some filters are washable, many are not. Your user manual should tell you. As a general rule, cloth- or sponge-type filters are probably washable, paper ones are not. If you do wash the filter, give it at least 24 hours in a warm place to dry thoroughly before re-using.
