Let it sit for 30 minutes before trying to use again. Make sure the bag is not full and check to see if filter is clogged.

Imagine a motor that gets jammed, overheats a control circuit, and trips a breaker which in turn interrupts power to the device. This may reset after the temperature has returned to operating margins or it may not, depending on the cause.

So, if after a pudential time of being turned off, your machine does not start, you have a problem.

Check for power in the plug to the main switch. In most cases the long wires break or damage affter prolonged use. If the switch activate power then check power tilll motor. If so the motor is defective and might be though of for estimation of cost. Look out also for a load trip switch.
If motor brushes are bad clean and set but if winding is open you need to estimate.

The electric motor inside your Dyson has a built in over-current trip to protect itself (and you if it seriously overheated and caught fire). This normally automatically resets itself, however if the motor has just about had it, next time it is switched on it just trips again.

The primary cause of motors overheating is that the filters are not cleaned or replaced frequently enough. Dont be fooled by Dyson's "lifetime filters". They need to be regularly cleaned and replaced when necessary.

Replacement motors are available on eBay for about £25, however replacing one requires good DIY skills and tools.

It sounds like it could be the fan assy. I would ck. with a vacuum repair shop with free estimates. That should save you some time and some $$$$

This issue is usually a result of a blockage causing an overheat. You will almost certainly find that there is a blockage either on the detatchable hose or just behond the brush on the floor cleaning head. The blockage will have caused the lack of suction and as more debris collects around the blockage, the suction deteriorates and the moror has to work harder and harder. Eventually, the motor is working so hard it starts to overheat and the iverheat sensor on the motor trips out the power to the motor to stop it getting damaged. USUALLY, after about 30 - 60 minutes, the motor cools down and the overheat sensor allows the motor to be powered up again.

Now, a few things to think about... If it springs back into life again after cooling down, it will all happen again if you haven't cleared the blockage. If it DOESN'T start up again after a 2 hour rest, you have a problem. Some overheat sensors have to be manually re-set by pushing a pin or very small rod into the sensor to click the concave bi-metal disc in the sensor back into its convex position. Most morot overheat sensors should automatically re-set, but they do fault out and stay permanently in the OFF state once they have tripped out. Either way, I'm afraid I can't tell you where the sensor is on your particular machine, or what type of sensor it is.

The bottom line here is, if it does spring back into life again, find and remove the blockage before you use it. If it doesn't spring into life, it's time to hand it over to someone who knows what they're doing... While they're at it, ask them to locate and clear the blockage for you :-)

This is overheating and tripping the thermal cut-out on the motor.
You need to strip off all filters, clean or replace them (if caked solid). Very often panel filters can be cleaned by knocking them on an outside wall, then a good blow to clear loose dust.
Dyson's often overheat if the filters are not cleaned.
Make sure belts are in good condition, and beater brushes only contact the floor slightly. You need to adjust this hight for different floor surfaces - or it will overheat on thick carpet.

Lind a, I don't recall if this unit has an overheat sensor. Try it again and if it shuts off see if the vac feels very hot, but do not touch the switch, leave it in the on position, to cool down. When a vac overheats it will generally restart on its own in about 20 minutes if it has a heat sensor on the motor.
If your vac restarts, you either have a defective sensor or a blockage in the hose or filter area causing the motor to overheat.
If it does not restart your problem is electrical, sticking carbon brush on motor, bad cord, etc.

the motor brushes are worn down and can be expensive to get someone to fit them for you so i think its time for a new cleaner
