DVD/CD Drive will not read discs

It occasionally reads audio cds if you open them with Windows Media Player, however it will not read any form of DVD and i am trying to install my Norton Anti-Virus and i cannot do so beacuse the laptop will not read the disc.

  • glass_passen Jul 15, 2009

no it will not read any form of disc; dvd, cd, program discs...nothing. I have looked in the device manager and it says there is nothing wrong with the drive, it worked for a little while then it stopped working, so i did a system recovery and it worked for a little while and then it stopped working again.

Has it read othe DVD's? Like a movie? Didn't know Norton was using DVD's. I think they still use CD's

It is likely that your dvd drive is defective. the drive is held in by one screw either on the bottom or under the keyboard. once you pull it out you will see the model number for it and then can find one either at a good computer store or on ebay and replace it and your problem will be fixed

Cds wont play in dvd-rw player

The only discs that a DVD player is guaranteed to read are DVD discs. Support for CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW may be included, but is by no means guaranteed.

CD-R was designed to be read by an infrared 780nm laser. DVD uses a visible red 635nm or 650nm laser, which aren't reflected sufficiently by the organic dye polymers used in CD-R media. As a result, many DVD players can't read CD-R media. Some DVD players come with two lasers so that they can read CD-R.

But as I have already stated that Most DVDs today have the tendency of playing CDs. So if your DVD player is new then it must have that support. Have a look at the quality of your CDs also.

I have the hp inspiron 531s.Can i burn cd or dvd??

Yes your computer has a DVD writer... It should have the software to burn DVDs and CDs

The Dell Inspiron 531 is a desktop personal computer with a Microsoft Windows operating system. An Inspiron equipped with a CD burner can be used to record audio discs using Windows Media Player, which comes installed on the Inspiron as a standard part of the software package Dell loads onto its computers. Blank, recordable discs and pre-recorded audio CDs are the only supplies needed for the project.

It doesnt read any dvd neither software nor video, but can read audio cds, vcds, and mp3s

Put a DVD disk into the drive.
Open "My Computer".
Right-mouse click on the icon for the CD/DVD drive.
Click "Explore".
If a window opens, then your hardware can read the DVD media.
If not, then you need to replace the CD/DVD drive.

Then, you need software, such as the _free_ 'VLC' software,
downloadable from the Internet, to play DVD-videos on your computer.

My dell dvd rom can't read some cds and dvds

you were saying some? and not all the cds and dvds? it may be that those other discs are unreadable anymore caused by scratches, marks, or the like. if other discs can be read then the player is all good. also check what file format you are trying to play. it may also be that the file format you are playing is not compatible with the program you are using to play it with like windows media player, media classic, etc.

Replacing a cd drive

The 4600 has PowerDVD to play DVDs (You should have the software CD to install it on the 3000) DVD burning software would be Roxio/Sonic, and you should have that CD too.
If you don't have the CDs, then try download.com to download Free player software and Burning software

Will not read DVD discs.

It looks like you have a lens problem, DVD and CD use a different error correction and different track format.
A dirty lens can read CD but not DVD.
Tru first using a lens cleaner like this ones:

If it does not work you can try cleaning the lens directly with cotton and isopropyl alcohol, you will need to undo the screws at the button and to take apart the cover. Unplug power when doinfg this.

If it still does not work, since you aready reinstalled the firmware, the lens may be faulty.
You can order the lens pickup from factory and replace it.

I assume you're referring to music CDs. What media player are you useing. What happens when you open windows media player and hit play --> CD audio? Any error messages?

The CDROM drive may be bad.

HP Pavillion not reading audio CD

It is possible that this is a drive issue, I've seen drives that one of the optical reader device has gone out, but generally it'e the DVD reader and will only read CD's. It's very rare that the CD reader goes and the DVD reader works. Before you replace drive, if it's only music CD's (you didn't mention program CD's), then update your media player. If it still won't play, then unistall the media player and completely reload it. At this point you can replacse the drive.

Toshiba dvd rom sd r6012 isn't reading the DVDs

Try some factory CD and DVDs and just try to get them to open in Windows (not play in a media player program). If you get errors on every disc you try, it may be your CD/DVD hardware packing in.

If it reads some CDs or DVDs and not others, particularly media discs, you may be having software driver problems, otherwise, it is likely hardware.

Try inserting the disc and spinning it up while resting the laptop on its side, or even upside down. If it reads sideways or upside down, the CD/DVD reader hardware has gone and cannot probably be prepared (this is a symptom of physical controller failure and is ot fixable by normal means).

Good luck...
