Westinghouse Electric Dryer, Drum doesn't turn on start up, if your spin drum and close door it will start,

Either something is binding the blower wheel up or the motor is bad. The best thing is to take the front of the machine off to access the blower wheel to verify ifanything is indeed binding it.IF not read the next section.
If you can turn the drum and then the dryer starts you have a bad motor. The way the dryer works is when you initially push the start button, electricity is sent to the start winding, or stator, of the motor. This will in turn start the motor turning. From there the stator will drop out of the electrical process and at the same time the run winding, or rotor, will take over and the motor will continie to run. Your stator is damaged, has a burn spot, etc so by you turning the drum, the belt around the drum is moved which is attached to the motor pulley. You basically take the place of the stator. Long story short, you have a bad motor.

The dryer makes a new noise now when the drum is turning. It is a steady "tick -- tick -- tick -- tick --etc" which is laid over the normal sounds of the motor, the turning drum, and the...

You have done a good job of isolating the noise. Sounds like you will have to replace your drive motor. Very likely a mechanical problem in your motor, that is not going to fix itself. If you continue to run your dryer with the noise coming from your motor, you run the risk of the motor burning out electrically and causing a fire or a shock hazard. It is unlikely that this will happen, but it is possible and thereby not worth the risk of getting shocked or having a fire. The Whirlpool Duet Dryer is the best dryer built, so it is worth replacing the motor. Good luck, Appliance Specialists

This is an electric dryer. Over the past week when

one of 3 things could be wrong/1)dry,tight motor bearings/2)drum bearing bad/3) bad motor windings, remove belt off drum and see if anything turns hard i.e. motor, drum each one isolated then run motor w/o drum belt on drum and see if motor gets overly warm or hot especially around the bearing ends

Our Maytag gas dryer drum doesn't turn. Replaced belt. Heats up but drum isn't turning

There are three possible reasons why the drum doesn't turn.
  1. Broken belt. You replaced the so in this case it's not.
  2. Door switch. The dryer will not operate if teh door switch is defective. It is inside the drier main housing near the door frame. You need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. Replace if defective.
  3. Motor. If the motor hums when the start button is pressed, the motor maybe burned-out. Check the dryer motor:
  • Check the blower fan housing for obstruction and manually turn the motor shaft.
  • If the motor is very stiff or cannot be turned manually, you need to replace the motor.
  • If the motor rotate freely, run the motor without the belt. If it runs fine, there maybe problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum.
  • Rotate the drum by hand. If it is difficult to rotate it, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley. Reassemble the dryer and try it again.
  • If the motor hums but does not run on it's own even without the belt, but can be turned freely by hand, you need to replace the motor start capacitor or the motor itself.

When we push the on button, you can hear a hum,

Sounds like the belt that turns the drum has broken. the hum sound is the motor turning. Does it still get hot in the drum? If so then you need a replacement belt ($15-$25).You can open the rear or the dryer to confirm the belt is broken. Be sure to unplug from the wall outlet to avoid electrical shock.
