SOURCE: How do I copy a legal size document?
You need to change it in the menu, it's stopping because once it reaches the letter size the sensor detects that there is still paper there and jams.
SOURCE: Paper size detected is not supported when making a copy
When I saw that so many other people were also getting this error message, I thought sure there would be a solution posted by somebody before too long. Guess no one could figure it out!
The problem continued and was getting extremely irritating so I went and spent a couple of hours on HP's support site and finally figured out what to do, even though I never did find the exact error message we've all been getting.
Basically, the fix is to change the paper size default setting in the Copy Menu from Automatic to Letter. You do this by pressing Copy, then #6, select Letter (which is #2), and that will bring you back to the Copy Menu. Scroll down through all 10 selections until you get to the bottom which is Set New Defaults and select this.
I've tried making several copies and it has worked every time now...no error message in sight! However, if you're trying to make copies onto paper other than standard 8.5x11, you'll have to select that with each individual job since there will no longer be an "Automatic" detection.
Hope this helps everyone else who has had this annoying problem!
SOURCE: My printer display incorrect paper size and stop printing
Try checking that the paper size settings in your printer driver ar set to either 'AUTO' or to the paper size that is being fed thru the printer. Let me know?
SOURCE: HP 7310
Both these issues could be caused by a dirty media sensor. If this is the issue you may be able to improve things by selecting "plain paper" rather than "Automatic".
You can also try cleaning the sensor. The sensor is on the bottom of a black plastic piece mounted to the side of the carriage. Open the printer lid as if you were going to change the cartridges, then gently move the carriage about an inch to the left. There is a small black part mounted toward the bottom rear of the carriage. The sensor is on the underside of this. You could try cleaning the sensor with a damp Q-tip. Be careful not to get in the service station area where there is waste ink. This can be messy, be especially careful not to get ink on the sensor.
If the sensor was the issue normal printing could take several hundred passes of the carriage, with the paper moving just a bit after each swath. There is another possibility for slow printing, where the printhead pauses for 8-15 seconds at the end of each swath. This may be caused by a cartridge issue. In this case try removing the cartridges and cleaning the contact pads as shown here (for a different printer series, but similar....). If the carriage still pauses for 8-15 seconds after each swath then one of the cartrdgies will need to be replaced.
