I have a Garmin nuvi 255w GPS. Recently, the cigarette lighter adapter cord began to fray, causing the unit to flip back and forth between running off the battery and drawing power from the cigarette...

You must buy the Special Traffic cord to receive the traffic.....it will have 2 lights to it to let you know that it is working..... just a regular cigarette lighter adapter plug will Not work, you need the Traffic Receiver cord.

You can get them on the Garmin site www.garmin.com

I DO NOT HAVE THE POWER CHARGING CORDS... ONLY THEAIN PART OF THE LIGHT/INFLATOR . WHAT POWER SUPPLY CLORD IS USED?

On the side of the unit is a small black flap that covers two prongs that you can plug a standard 110-120 volt extension cord into which will charge the unit. There are 3 read lights and 1 green lights on the top that lets you know when it is fully charged. The 12 volt charging cord is basically a cord that has 2 cigarette lighter plugs. One plugs into the unit and the other plugs into a power port/cigarette lighter plug.

WE CHARGE THE MAGELLAN GPS AND TURN IT OFF. BUT WHEN WE GO TO USE IT AGAIN IT IS DEAD. I ONLY HAVE THE LIGHTER OUTLET TO HOOK UP FOR POWER SO WHEN I NEED TO PROGRAM IT IN THE HOUSE I DO NOT HAVE A WAY TO...

Hello kdiltzbook,

Most GPS units can be charged three different ways:

1. Connection to a computer via USB port
2. Connection to a automobile via cigarette lighter plug
3. Connection to a wall outlet via an AC adapter

Typically most GPS devices these days include only the USB cord. Some GPS units also include the cigarette lighter plug. For most GPS units the cigarette lighter plug and AC adapter are optional accessories have to be purchased in addition to the GPS.

You don't mention which model of Magellan GPS you have so I am not sure which cords your GPS should have included. It sounds like you have the cigarette lighter cord and the USB cord? I am sure that Magellan has an AC adapter available for your GPS. You will want to contact them directly (their website is http://www.magellangps.com) or visit an electronics store that sells Magellan GPS receivers (such as Best Buy™) to purchase the adapter.

However, most GPS receivers can be charged from the USB programming cord on the computer. However, ensure you are plugging the cord directly into a USB 2.0 on the computer itself NOT a port on a USB hub. (A USB hub may not output enough power to actually power and charge the GPS.)

You will also want to check and replace the fuse on the automobile plug.

I believe that both the USB and automobile cords should be charging the GPS. If neither adapter is charging the unit then the problem may be the GPS unit itself. The GPS may have a bad battery or problem with its charge circuitry. If that’s the case the unit may require factory service as the battery pack is generally not considered to be end user replaceable.

Best Regards,
Ken

Installation / wiring

Yes, you can do what you said above. The only issue I see is that you should still add an inline fuse between the GPS and the power source you will be connecting it to.** SEE NOTE BELOW **
The cigarette lighter plug has a fuse in it. Most of the fuses you have in the car start at 5 Amps and go up in value, like 10A, 20A, etc.

The problem is these values are way too high should the GPS have a catastrophic failure or the GPS power leads get pinched or shorted to ground. You'll burn up the GPS and its wiring before the auto fuse blows.

You need a low rated fuse (probably 1/4A) inline with the GPS. This will give you adequate protection. You can buy inline fuse cords at Radio Shack.

** NOTE **
Check to make sure that the DC output of the cigarette adapter is indeed +12VDC and not some lower voltage indicating that there is an internal regulator circuit. I took a look at the 660 owners manual and it says the GPS input voltage is +12VDC, so you should be ok. I also hear there is some electronics inside of the cigarette lighter plug. It may have to do with charging the internal GPS battery. You could always take apart the cigarette plug and remove the internal board and use it in your hard wiring to your vehicle.

Once you get it all working, you could duplicate what you built for another vehicle. You can buy the cigarette adapters online.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good luck!
