Install a brand new needle. The old needle may be bent, dull, or defective.

Use the correct needle and thread suitable for the fabric you are sewing. All About Needles

Use only good quality thread, not old or bargain bin thread.

Rethread the machine from the very beginning. BE SURE to RAISE the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread so it will seat properly in the tension disks. Check that all the steps in the threading process have been followed.

Do not pull or push the fabric through the machine, Guide it lightly to keep it going straight but let the machine pull it through.

Check to make sure there are no pieces of thread or lint in the bobbin area.

Check pages 114 & 115 of the owner's manual:
http://www.manualslib.com/manual/504973/Pfaff-Expression-2034.html#product-expression%202044

If it continues to skip stitches or sew unevenly, it may need repair service. Could be a timing issue or something is loose.

Thank you.

SOURCE: Blind hemmer

First get a new quality needle of the right size for your machine use a good quality hemming thread and check your tensions. If this fails to fix the problem you will probably have to have the timing checked.

SOURCE: How do I do a stretch stitch?

The bes way to hem a t-shirt on a household machine is to use a double needle, straight stitch. You will see two straight stitches on top and zig zag on the back. Just make sure the zig zag catched the top of the hem.

Making an elastic waistband? How to.

Hello!

There is more than one way. This is an easy way to make an elastic waistband on mid to lightweight fabric.
Begin by measuring the waist diameter and subtracting 2" from the measurement.
An easy way to make an elastic waistband is to sew the ends of the elastic together, creating a loop with the elastic. Be sure there are no twists in the elastic before sewing the ends together.
Fold the elastic in half using the seam as one edge and mark the other side with a pin. Fold the elastic in half again and mark the two other folds.
Your elastic should now have 3 pins and the seam quarting the circle.
Hopefully your pants have a center, back and two side seams, making the next step easy. If not, fold and mark the front back and sides like you just did with the elastic.
You're now ready to pin the elastic to the OUTSIDE of the pants. Line up the edges of the fabric and elastic. Match the marks on the elastic to those on the pants and pin them together.
Using a quarter inch seam, stretch the elastic between the pins/quarter marks and sew it in place.
IF your machine has a lightening stitch, use that. If not a zigzag stitch will wear better than a straight stitch, which will also work but may snap if used on a stretchy fabric.
After you have attached the elastic fold it to the "inside" of the pants taking care not to fold or bend the elastic. You have just created a nice finished top edge to your pants!
Giving the elastic a stretch so it fits the fabric, pin the front, back and sides like you did before, making sure to pin the lower edge of the elastic.
Stretching the elastic to make it fit the pants, stitch the lower edge close to the edge, again with a stretchy stitch if possible.
Next stitch the top close to the edge from the front. (I know it's already attached, but this will keep the top looking nice.) 1/8" looks nice, but just make sure your distance to the edge is consistant.
Sit back and admire your handy work! You've now got the elastic sewn on and there are no exposed raw edges.

If you are working with a heavier fabric let me know and I can explain how to make a casing for the elastic. The kind you thread the elastic through.

I would like to know what stitch number to put my sewing machine onto to stitch stretch material. I have a Elna 40 sewing machine regards Judy

Looks like stitch #06 might be a stretch stitch. You could probably also use a slight 08 or 09 zig-zag. Unless you are sewing something really stretchy (lycra) IMHO, a slight zig-zag is fine and actually is a lot faster than a stretch stitch which takes a few stitches forward and then one or two stitches in reverse. The stitch #09 is something that I use frequently for stretch fabrics.

My new Singer machine ("Curvy") purchased last week (3/2014) has a page on stretch stitches. The way the book is written, it lists Straight Stretch Stitch on the same page as Ric Rac, HOneycomb, and...

A zig-zag is also a stretch stitch. Usually, a "built-in" stretch stitch will stitch forward a couple and then stitch backward and then stitch forward again (time consuming and uses a lot of thread--but suitable if that's what you want). Whatever you are sewing, whether it is a seam or finished raw edge and the fabric is stretch, you will need to use a stretch or zig-zag. A straight stitch will pop the threads as soon as the fabric has to give.

You can test your stitches on some scrap fabric and see what looks best.

An Over-edge stitch is just that, just a stitch over the fabric edge. It probably would not be suitable for sewing a seam.

My machine is skipping stitches

Lower the pressure on the feed dogs, use a stretch stitch, and longer stitch length. Be sure to use a good quality thread, and maybe go lighter weight thread.

Why is my machine skipping stitches

this is caused by uneven winding of the bobbin, sometimes the spool of thread winds unevenly when it travels up and down the spool. the best solution i have found is to use small spools of thread when winding the bobbins

Coverstitching on White Speedylock serger

Your machine cannot do a cover stitch. Check the Brother website, they make a cover stitch only machine, it works much better than any of the serger/cover stitch combination machines, and it is a lot less money.
