in order to make the 1/4" hex drive impact drive 1/4" or 3/8" sockets, you need a 1/4" hex adapter for sockets.
They are available at most hardware stores. While i've broken several sockets, and many screwdriver bits, I've never had an issue with with the socket adapters.
You can also get an adapter that gives you a chuck like a conventional drill.
If you've been working them hard, it's not a bad idea to remove them, and put them back in. this reduces the chance of getting the bit stuck from the repeated impact.
As far as changing the chuck of the unit to another one, i'm not sure if it's possible.
