You need to replace the drum and toner to correct the issue. That's the sign of the drum at its end of life.

SOURCE: Toner not printing on right side of paper

hello! It sounds like the imaging drum is damaged. In some toner carts (especially by HP) they have the drum built right in the cart. And when a new cartridge is installed and when they are replaced can rule out a bad drum. In this case It must be separate. You should be able to remove the image drum and inspect it. Just don't touch the drum with bare hands! This can also be a symptom of three other things. It can also be the drum that heats the toner onto the paper. It could be dirty and that is tricky to repair along with the fact is that toner could be being scraped off the paper before being hardened as well. This line streak can be traced to a foreign material in beween the pinch rollers, it is a good idea to see if a piece of ripped paper is stuck inside. Finally, it could be electronic failure with the laser module; scanning electronics. That is bad news!

I HAVE REPLACED TONER WITH THE CORRECT BROTHER TONER CARRTRIDGE AND THE MACHINE KEEPS TELLING ME TONER ERROR AND REINSTALL DRUM UNIT..HELP

Hi there,

Below are instructions that I have found from the internet. Hope that they will help.

  • Open the front cover of the printer.
  • Hold down the Go button for 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up. Then release the Go button
  • Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
  • Replace the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the printer.
  • Close the front cover of the printer
  • Your drum unit should now be reset
  • MFC / DCP PRINTER SERIES

1.Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge. Wait 1 or 2 minutes.
2.Replace the drum unit and toner cartridge into printer.
3.The error message "Change Drum Soon/Drum end soon" will continue to appear if the drum counter was not reset when you replace the drum unit.
4.To clear this error message, you need to reset the drum counter as instructed below.
5.Make sure that the machine is turned on.

For MFC users: To confirm you are installing a new drum, press 1. For DCP users To confirm you are installing a new drum, press the Up Arrow key

7.When the LCD shows Accepted, close the front cover.
    8.Your drum is now reset.

Resetting the drum unit will not improve print quality. It only resets your drum and allows you to continue to print. You decide when to replace the drum unit not the manufacturer!

The Brother machine has separate consumables the toner cartridge and the drum unit. Verify you replace only the drum unit and not the toner cartridge

Do not reset the drum counter when you only replace the toner cartridge

3.Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.

  • We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
  • To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.

4.Push down the blue lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

  • DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire. It could explode, resulting in injuries.
  • Use neutral detergents when cleaning the printer.
  • DO NOT use cleaning materials that contain ammonia, alcohol, any type of spray, or any type of flammable
substance to clean the outside or inside of the machine. Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock.
  • Be careful not to inhale toner.
  • Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, wipe or wash it off with cold water at once.
  • To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustrations.
5.Unpack the new drum unit

Wait to unpack a drum unit until immediately before you put it in the printer. Exposure to direct sunlight or room light may damage the drum unit.

6.Put the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put the cartridge in properly, the blue lock lever will lift automatically.

Make sure that you put in the toner cartridge properly, or it may separate from the drum unit.

7.Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer.

8.Close the front cover.
9.Make sure that the Drum LED is now off.

We have a Brother HL 2140 series the printer will not print. It has a new toner cart. The drum light is lit . Any suggestions?

This machine has a separate drum and toner cartridge. Replacing the toner does not reset the drum light. Double check that the light on is, in fact, the drum light, and if it is, replace the drum unit. This should resolve your problem.
In order to replace the drum unit, do this: 1) With the printer on and the drum light blinking, open the front cover. 2) Press and hold the Go button for about 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up. Once all LEDs light up, release the Go button. 3) Pull the print assembly out of the machine. 4) Push down the green lock lever to take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. 5) Put the toner cartridge into the new drum unit. 6) Reinsert the print assembly into the machine. 7) Close the front cover and verify that the lights turn off.
It is theoretically possible that you could reset the counter without actually changing the drum by simply skipping steps 3-6 above, but I have never tried it before and Brother may be checking a chip on the drum unit to verify that it is, in fact, a new drum unit. If they are, you will have to actually replace the unit to make the light go off. I would strongly recommend against resetting the counter without actually changing the drum though, as your print quality will degrade and the machine may start to dump toner into the inside creating a rather large mess and a hefty repair bill.

4. Pull the cartridge out of the drum unit (Pull the blue handle up and out)
5. Place the cartridge into the new drum unit. Make sure the white rollers on the toner cartridge match the white arrows on the drum unit. The cartridge will click when it is in place.
6. Place the cartridge assembly back in the printer.

8. Close the cover, and you're ready to go!

I hope this helps! Good luck!

How should I change the cartridges

What cartridges do you need to change? There are only 2 in this machine. If you open the right side door with the release button then open the front door you can see the 2 cartridges. The one on the left side with the green button on it is the toner/developer cartridge. It is replaced most often. When it needs to be replaced you will see a light on the operation panel that looks like a stack of 6 dots. You just press the green button down and slide the cartridge out.
Just to the right of the toner is the drum cartridge. When it is due for replacement you wil see a light on the panel that looks something like a small flashlight battery or barrel. You can just slide the drum cartridge out, but only after removing the toner cartridge first. The toner cartridge must be out of the machine before removing or installing the drum cartridge.
Good Luck and Thanbk You using Fixya.

HP 4 PLUS HORIZONTAL LINE EVERY 4TH PAGE

Hi,

Based on what you described the problem may be with your toner cartridge. The green photosensitve drum has become faulty somehow. I'd suggest trying another toner cartridge, it's the easiest way to determine what the problem is.

Another part that could be at fault is the scanner. It "etches' the image to the drum inside the cartridge, so if the scanner is bad it can make it look as if the toner cartridge is bad.

Toner light is still on

If you put new toner in your used cartridge and you still have the Toner light, you need to reset the "reset gears". Take the cover off of the gear side of the cartridge. The reset gears are actually attached to the inside of the cover. Move the gear with the lever to the opposite side of the current position.
