Where can I get my hard drive mended it just ticking and will not work

Windows 7 seems to have a lot of issues with external hard drives and any usb attached devices
Click start control panel administrate tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

Automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in one box then select check now start then after its finished return and tick the other box you should not

do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive
i have found the best results ticking in one box the returning after it has finished then ticking the other box

it might take some time depending on the size of your disk but be patient


the next works on usb data / pen drives im not sure on external hard drives

Right click on your drive select properties then on customize restore Default in W 7

you might have to alternate doing this repeatedly until the problem is resolved

and i have found that leaving the a usb data drive plugged in and restarting my computer W7 my usb drive will work again (strange)

I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box

Go to the power settings and set it to never turn off hard drive...the tick tick noise are the read and write heads working (that's what writes information on the hard drive) which is perfectly normal with an older hard drive....the hang is probably a virus or needs a good cleaning...I recommend advanced system care as a program to clean your hard drive and fix the errors....uninstall any and all programs not needed or unused

if the ard drive do,s not power up you can get into it /contact maxtor ask them if they can mend it but would not build my hopes up

Hi, If you have warranty remaining then you can definately replace it but if not then you'll have to search for some Hard disk repair stores & there u can ask for the data backup too.

If it's ticking, it's likely damaged. I know some hard drives have a high failure rate, and can die early.

I mended it somehow after going to control panel and looking at the volume control etc ticked something and since talked to my nephew in germany thank you

I've had this problem many times with external SATA hard drive plugged into the usb. My 120gig hard drive takes significant power to operate it. On laptops with a long cable to the usb, I get the Tick tick tick sound and the light flash in concert with the ticking. On laptops with short cables to the usb, the hard drive works. On one desk top, the hard drive doesn't work on the front usb but does on the rear because the rear has no cables. The usb comes off the motherboard. Conclusion? Most likely a voltage problem from longer than usual cables from the motherboard to the usb. One solution is plug the hard drive in the rear usb. Another solution is buy a more expensive cable linking the hard drive to the usb. Or buy a shorter cable. More expensive cable may have thicker wires that won't resist the current. But I do not believe for a minute that the hard drive is faulty. I've seen it too many times and it has never been a faulty hard drive.
