Bought new cordless at&t phone & forgot to erase all directory phone numbers from old one am Freecycling it. Did removing battery & disconnecting base from phone service & energy source perform this service for me? I have not been able to find an answer to this from their manual or anywhere else -- duh!

You did record a message on the answerer, didn't you? Mine displayed that until I recorded the outgoing message for the answerer. You do not need any service from your phone provider. The answerer in the base unit simply records the caller's message when you don't answer after a set number of rings. The manual tells you how to name the handset, which is a nice feature if you don't wish to use "unit 1, unit 2, etc".

Wow, This took quite some digging around to find, but here it is all 104 pages of the manual.

You may need to reset the Telephone Answering System. Complete the following steps to reset the Telephone Answering System:
Step 1: Disconnect the power to the telephone base.
Step 2: Wait a few minutes and then reconnect the power to the telephone base and charger.
Step 3: Set the day and time.

ok i found a solution...
for good measure, unplug everything from the main base, wait a few minutes, then plug everything back in. this never solves the problem, but it's standard troubleshooting procedure.
next, follow the menu instructions on the non-working handset to re-register.
if the re-registration doesn't work, your handset is probably shot. you can buy a reconditioned one on ebay for under $30. take the battery out to find the model #.
