Previously the Eos Utility program provided with the camera worked well (on XP sp2) and downloaded all pictures neatly into folders for the date the pictures were taken.
Now however, for some unknown reason, this utility doesnt work. The camera is recognised and is listed in device manager as an "Image Capture Device" as Canon Powershot S3 IS.
If I use the windows native tooling I can pull images off the camera (same with Adobe Photoalbum) - but it doesnt sort them neatly by the date they were taken so its a bit anoying.
Any ideas what might have changed?

It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. You may fix it, but it will pop up again some day. Camera/cable interface problems are notorious. But why put up with the headache of these software problems? Please see the following post, as it outlines a much easier, faster, and less error prone alternative way to download your photos:

My EOS Utility for the S3 works fine under XP-SP3, however with Vista +SP1 ( 64 bits ) not anymore. Vista does recognize the camera however the EOS Utility not anymore, similar like origal supplied problem.
