Try a different usb port on your computer. If you using ones on the front, try the ones in the back. If that doesn't work, try the reader on a different computer. If the reader doesn't work it is most likely defective. A pretty common occurance with usb card readers in general.


Also try putting a card in the card reader before inserting it into the computer, not while it is plugged in.

I am assuming you have moved the board to another case and have connected front-mounted card readers etc. but none are working. I would check in device manager and see if there are any devices with exclamation points beside them.....which would indicate that windows sees the device, but that you are missing some of the drivers for the board which can be downloaded from HP. If you have devices in device manager that are labelled "unknown device", then a program like SIW or unknown devices may help you determine which drivers to get. A safe bet would be to go to HP's download section and get everything available for that board.

Also, check the bios and ensure that "plug and play OS" is set to on or yes

I would also look in the bios/setup and ensure that the connectors on the board are actually turned on. USB headers on motherboards are pretty generic, meaning that you should be able to plug in pretty much any front panel device (audio,card readers,usb).

• Verify in BIOS the devices are enabled
  
• Verify in device manager there are no driver problems and the devices are not disabled
• Open the case and verify the cables for the front ports are plugged in all the way

Either the Card Reader isn't plugged in, or isn't any good.

Repair would be to purchase another Card Reader, but after checking the USB header/s on the motherboard, that the Card Reader is plugged into.

If your PC has an SD card reader you can place the microSD card into the adapter that it came with and then insert it into the slot on the PC. The SD card reader will be a small slot usually at the front of the computer. If there is no SD card reader then place the microSD card into the gadget you use it with such as your camera/phone etc and connect the device to your PC using a cable the device came with. The cable will have a USB jack at one end that will fit into the USB ports at the front/back of your computer. Once your device is connected you can follow the on-screen instructions to access your pictures.

This is probably set in the BIOS. You need to reboot the computer and enter the Setup/BIOS to enable the ports. Otherwise they're physically disconnected in the case and you will need and expert to reconnect.

Most likely the USB driver is corrupted.  Uninstall the one you have now from Device manager, reboot and when the New Hardware wizard appears let it get it from Windows Update.

2. Check in bios USB controllers are enabled or disabled. if disabled enable it.

There are a few likely scenarios that would cause your card reader not to work.

1. The cable inside the computer that connects the front-panel card reader to the motherboard has come loose. You can check inside the case to make sure the cable is tight and connected. You should do this with the computer turned off, and turn it on when you're done.

2. The card reader itself has gone bad and stopped working. If this is the case, you'll need to either contact the manufacturer for repair, or you can go out and get yourself an external USB card reader for cheap.

3. The card reader is functional, but there's something wrong in the operating system that prevents the cards from being read, because the operating system doesn't know how to address the card reader. This can usually be fixed by re-installing drivers and software for the card reader.

Most USB connection on the front of the computer are in parallel with the ones on the back which can limit there use.
