SOURCE: won't print red

Red is a combination of Magenta and Yellow. Print a nozzle check and observe for Magenta, Yellow and cyan. If the three colours are printed, no problem with the cartridge. Then it must be the problem of seeing colours in your monitor. .

Just wondering: my printer's yellow and black toner are both empty and need replacing. Would this cause the printer to calibrate for minutes at a time? After calibrating, I tried printing a document with...

If your going to print in color may it be just red or blue. You really need all of the cartridges for it to work. Because for the printer to come up with those colors. It would need all three colors Cyan, Magenta and Yellow to come up with the any color, in your problem, Blue and Red.

Only prints in green and blue

You are more than likely out of magenta (red) ink. That printer uses a tri-color cartridge, and it has cyan (blue) magenta (red) and yellow ink. Green is blue + yellow-therefore you do have those two colors; since it will not print anything red or black you will need to replace both cartridges.

Prints all yellow, with some blue and black, no brown

the problem is very simple the magenta ink the cartridge is over or the head is been blocked from where the magenta ink comes out,
because red colour requires ---yellow plus magenta(pink)----to make it red.and ----dark yellow plus magenta(pink) -------- for brown colour.

Magenta Cartridge

I have just found a solution on the hp support forum that says:-

Common problem of scanner optics dusted over requiring removing the laser/scanner, uncovering and cleaning mirrors and lenses. See the attached procedure. Takes about an hour, no parts.

On the second message on the following link you will see an attachment that has instructions for the above.
