The pic usually starts out as if the bright contrast is too bright. Then it returns to a normal pic

Pry off the lower speaker grill... Remove the screws at the lower edge of the screen framing and lift screen frame of the two catches at the top. Be careful, there will be wires still attached to the front button panel... Then lay the screen down and support the bottom of it in some way because the button panel wires won't reach all the way... then using windex and papertowel cleam the mirror and lens(s) on each of the crts. Also clean the back or inside of the screen area and reverse the process to re-mount the screen.

Good Day, Techwanab;
Look for this to be your problem: CHECK FOR OPEN L2C50 PART #325C146030 ON THE SIGNAL PCB, OR BAD CONNECTIONS AND LEAKY CAPS IN THAT AREA.
Hope this was helpful and not too late.
Good Luck, big IRISH.

This sounds like the most common thing that fails on projection TV's, regardless of the brand. The convergence circuit has two, or sometimes three STK IC chips mounted on heat sinks to drive the convergence yokes. They typically last anywhere from 5-10 years, then they fail. It sounds like in your case, the solder joints on the bottom of one of these chips may be failing and some fresh solder will make it go for a while. If it was my set, I would go ahead and replace both STK chips once I took the trouble to take it apart.

If this is a ws-65411: it sounds like one of the two STK-392-110 convergence IC's is bad; you need to have both replaced at the same time; I do this type of repair(done hundreds of them) and most can be done right in your home.
The two ic's can be purchased on Ebay for about 12 dollars plus shipping.
This is the slow time of year for TV repair shops--find someone in your area who knows how to do this kind of repair---here shops charge 3-4 hundred but I charge 200-250 total depending on brand of set.
Shop around and if they insist on "taking set to shop" keep looking---any good tech can do this repair in your home---MAKE SURE HE CHANGES BOTH of the IC's!
I do this here for free so if this has been helpful give me a vote here.

Yes... from the moment the lamp is put into service, it begins to deminish in brightness. You should order a replacement lamp to have on hand.
