Its a function of the source and the tv picture settings. Go to the source (direct tv, cable, co-ax?) menu , settings and look for screen display sizes.
Your remote has a red dot "wide" button which will also have a screen size effect. You can cycle through the formats

Hi!
My name is Chris.
I have this Phillips Wide Screen TV that didn't have or come with a remote, so I had to go out and buy a universal remote for it today from a BIG W Store.
I'm having some technical difficulties & problems with switching and turning it on, but as I use the universal remote to turn on the TV, I'm having a bit of a slight problem with it turning it on, Ok, Yes, it works and Powers on, but there is nothing showing or giving me the indication that there is no picture or sound showing up on this Wide Screen Phillips TV, But there is a little red & green light at the bottome right hand corner that keeps on flashing red when ever I use the universal remote to switch the power on.
Is there a possibility, that i can get some help on here, to help me out with any suggestions, is to why I'm not getting any picture or sound showing up on this TV with this universal remote ?
Is there anyway that i can maybe get some help with this to help me out with solving my issue with the Phillips Wide Screen TV ?
Sir press the screen mode button in your remote below input select button, press the screen mode button repeatedly to select smart, 4:3, wide, zoom, or 14:9.
Smart- Display conventional 4:3 broadcast with an imitation wide screen effect. The 4:3 picture is stretched to fill the screen.
4:3- Display conventional 4:3 broadcast non-wide screen TV in the correct proportions.
Wide- Display wide screen 16:9 broadcast in the correct proportions.
Zoom- Display cinemascopic letter box format broadcasts in the correct proportions.
14:9- Display 14:9 broadcasts in the correct proportions. As a result, black border areas are visible on the screen.
The wide button on your remote adjusts the picture size. Each time you press it you adjust the picture. If repeatedly pressing the wide button is not changing the picture size check you cable/satellite remote control. Look for the hdzoom# button. There may also be an aspect or format button. When you adjust this the picture size changes and between the Sony remote and the cable/satellite remote you should be able to come to a happy medium. If the picture size still isn't changing you might not be set to the correct resolution i.e. 1080i on your cable/satellite box. It might be set too low or you might be in the wrong input (av 1 av 2 hdmi 1 hdmi 2) etc.
Some of the wide screen programs will leave blank strips top and bottom of the screen, you can fill the screen if your TV or the remote has picture size buttons where you can select "movie" mode or "movie zoom" modes. try stepping through picture size buttons. Some times it is marked as "wide" on your remote.
Was exactly what you said. The cable box settings were in wide mode. Couldn't figure it out at all. Funny thing was too.. on my cable box remote, the button under the #9 button is the # button.. it doesn't say zoom at all.. but it totally controls the zoom.
So thanks for that.. AND thanks for saying "under the #9 on the cable remote" instead of just saying .. the zoom button.
There could be a problem, but verify the settings as listed in the owner's manual as follows:
1 Press the MENU button to display the menu.
Press the ▲ or ▼ button to select Picture, then press the ENTER button.
2 Press the ▲ or ▼ button to select Size, then press the ENTER button.
3 Press the ▲ or ▼ button to select the screen format you want.
Press the ENTER button.
Press the EXIT button to exit.
• 16:9 : Sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode.
• Zoom1 : Magnifies the size of the picture on the screen.
• Zoom2 : Expands the Zoom1 format picture.
• Wide Fit : Enlarges the aspect ratio of the picture to fit the entire screen.
• 4:3 : Sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode.
• Just Scan : Use this function to see the full image without any cutoff when DTV
or HDMI 720p/1080i signals are input.
Press the P.SIZE button on the remote control to change the picture size.
And realize the restrictions as listed:
• In TV, VIDEO, S-VIDEO, and COMPONENT(480i, 480p) modes, all screen
modes can be selected. (16:9 ➞ Zoom1 ➞ Zoom2 ➞ 4:3)
• In COMPONENT(720p, 1080i) or HDMI(720p, 1080i) mode, 16:9, 4:3 and
Wide Fit can be selected.
• In Zoom1, Zoom2 and Wide Fit modes, you can move the picture on the
screen by pressing the ▲ or ▼ button.
•You can not change the picture size when PIP is set to Double.
•When Double ( , ) mode has been set in PIP, the Picture Size cannot
be set.
•Wide Fit can be used when watching a Digital HD (High Definition) signal.
Wide Fit sets the optimum picture format by expanding it both horizontally and
vertically. For example, you can reset the picture in 4:3 format to 16:9. Wide Fit
does not support all external devices (DVD, VCR etc.).
