If your saying that overall the sound works just fine but just some commercials don't have sound , this surely is a cause that not all commercials have Dolby decodable sound , this receiver has a dolby decoder inside it , im betting that you use the dolby sound selection most often , a simple test of theory is to select 2 channel stereo sound in set up and watch same commercials if you got sound now there's your problem , I do ask that you not complain to broadcasters of this (they might fix this) as id rather enjoy missing the entire commercial but no sound would be a viable alternative

For just listening, anything with a headphone/earbud output can be connected to any available analog Line Level input (except PHONO) with a simple adapter. They don't tell you that in the manual because they want you to purchase expensive accessories like docking stations. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2

.. or read the manual about setup and getting multichannel audio from 2-channel sources. Calibration and Selecting a Sound Field.
Distance is linear spatial separation of two points. dB is audibility, sound pressure level, volume. The distance setting affects how the various channels are delayed to arrive at the primary listening position at the appropriate time to provide a plausible sound field. Simply making one or more speakers louder or softer will not affect the spatiality of it.

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.
Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.
You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.
If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.
If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.
Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.
