The is article/adjective modifying subject boy. Yelled and saw are verbs in the predicate of this compound sentence; and is the conjunction. "Help" is the direct object of yelled. A brave dog quickly run to the rescue is a gerund. Subject of gerund is dog with a and brave as modifiers. Run is verb of gerund with quickly the adverb modifying. To the rescue is a prepositional phrase. To is the preposition, rescue the object of to and the a modifier. And here I though my 8th grade talents were no longer needed. Why is this listed in the chainsaw catagory?

An adverb most often modifies a verb or a verb phrase. It provides information about the manner, place, time, frequency, certainty, or other things about the verb or verb phrase in the sentence.

Usually it means that the word is an adverb (modifier for verbs, adjectives or other adverbs). Adverbs are commonly made from adjectives. Note the adjective USUAL, by appending -LY to it we make it an adverb.
The word LULLY is no adverb. It is the name of a French composer (XVII century) .

The only possible preposition I see is NEXT. However it can be adjective, preposition, or adverb. Here NEXT WEEK is an adverbial phrase (of time). So I do not see any prepositional phrase.

"in the room" is an adverbial phrase for the subject "Farrah's purse" and verb "was".

Try to classify them by figure of speech type:noun, verb, adverb, preposition, adjective etc..
