How do to adjust the bobbin tension? Do I need to remove the throat plate and loosen the screws that hold the bobbin mechanism in place so I can get to the tension screw?

Oh my... Please be sure you have a bobbin tension issue before trying to adjust the bobbin. Most stitch issues are related to upper tension problems. If you are getting thread nests (a mess of thread under the fabric), then the upper tension is too loose or it is not threaded properly. Be sure to RAISE the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread. That insures the thread will seat properly in the tension disks. If the bobbin thread is coming to the top of the fabric or the upper thread is breaking, then the upper tension is too tight and needs to be lowered.

Be certain to mark with permanent marker where the slot on the adjustment screw is located on the bobbin case BEFORE making any adjustments. That way you can return it to the original setting if you find changing the tension does not resolve the problem. And turn only 1/8 revolution each time, then test. Most sewists make adjustments to the bobbin case only when they are using heavier or lighter thread than usual. But if they make frequent adjustments to the bobbin case for this reason, then they usually buy a spare bobbin case so they will have one they can mess with and the other will always be set for regular sewing.

The tension screw for the bobbin thread is on the side of the bobbin carrier
that bit that you put the full bobbin in to clip it back onto the machine
t there is a small spring plate that you pull the bobbin thread under when you put the bobbin back in the carrier and you pull the thread down a slot and under that spring plate
the tension is adjusted by that small screw that holds that plate on
only very small adjustments make a lot of difference to the tension
don't touch any other screws or you will alter the needle /hook timing and that will put you a pickle

Brother XR 3240. Tension issues. Top thread is ok, the bottom thread is too tight. Per manual, I need to loosen the top tension, (dial to lower #) but I go all the way to 0 & still have same issue.

indications of a bobbin tension incorrect is the bottom thread lies flat under the bottom material
it seldom needs adjusting but if you have to the spring plate that you pull the thread under as you put the bobbin back in the holder is where you adjust it
there is a small screw that holds that plate on so the slightest movement of the screw makes a lot of difference of the thread tension
all thread tension problems relate to the needle thread tension and if you have it set to 0 then the thread will be bunching up under the material
you don't say what the issues are but pounds to peanuts , it will be the top tension that is the problem
It will be correct when you are threading the needle , you pull the thread out first before threading and there is a resistance to pulling the thread

Model 4075 white sewing machine problem with thread from bobbin

1. Replace thread with good thread. (Check by holding to light to see if there is fuzz).
2. Adjust the bobbin tension. The tension on top is set to three and the bobbin tension should be equal to this amount.
3. Replace needle.
4. Check the top tension with tension foot down to see if the thread can move or does it get stuck? If it gets stuck the tension control may need adjusted or cleaned.
5. Pull the bobbin thread above the throat plate and pull on the thread. It must have some tension but not get stuck.

I have gone through 3 needles and I've never had an issue before. The machine ate my fabric and I pulled it out (big mistake) and now my needles keep breaking.

1. Put one drop of oil on race. The bobbin case has two screws to adjust to keep it from moving either clockwise or counter clockwise. You will need to adjust these. It is tricky but once in the right position it will only move slightly. Give just enough free movement to allow thread to fit through.
2. Adjust the bobbin tension. The screw on the bobbin will need to be adjusted so it has a tension which equals four on the upper tension. This is a little tricky but if you're off a little you can adjust the upper tension to correct this. NOTE: You are trying to adjust the upper tension and the bobbin tension to be equal. This is similar to a tug of war.
3. Try to turn the hand wheel. Watch to see if the needle thread will ride across the top of the bobbin. It should do this without the thread getting stuck. If it gets stuck you will need to adjust the bobbin case screws to allow a little more movement allowance.
4. Replace the needle.
5. If you still notice the needle striking something under the throat plate you will need to have your machine timed.

Needle wont pick up bobbin thread

START WITH: SHARP NEEDLE (NEW), GOOD THREAD (NOT FUZZY-LONG STRANDS), ADJUST TENSION OF BOBBIN AND TOP.
1. Check the bobbin area and make sure the hook(pointed thing) and bobbin are all secure.
2. After you have adjusted the tension and reinstalled the bobbin: Extend three inches of thread from the bobbin.
3. After threading the top place the thread under the pressure foot and hold on to the thread. Turn the hand wheel towards you.
4. The needle has went under the throat plate (feed dogs plate) and begins to rise. You should feel the thread get caught and give a little resistance while you continue to turn the hand wheel.
5. The bobbin thread should come up with the needle thread.
6. If this hasn't taken place check to make sure the needle is inserted the right direction and totally pushed in. Retry again.
7. Look at your bobbin while turning the hand wheel. The needle thread should ride across the bobbin case and exit to the top of the machine again.
8. If these have not worked you will need to have your machine timed or the hook replaced.

The bottom thread in my sewing is looping and baggy.

There are several reasons to this. First, your top thread is not at equal/adequate tension and may be routed improperly. Second, your bottom thread has very little tension due to either improper shuttle adjustment and/or missing screw at the tension plate. Additionally it could be caused by excessive accumulation of fluff, which prevents tension mechanism from doing its job. In summary I suggest checking top and bottom threads for proper routing and tension in accordance with machine manufacturer's specs. I am almost positive that you will find a problem there. Good luck and report back if needed.

How can I fix a drop-in bobbin

  1. Cleaning and oiling the machine
    • 1 Unfasten the top, bottom, side and handwheel covers, using a screwdriver. Set the covers aside.
    • 2 Remove the plate that covers the thread bobbin. If it is screwed in place, use a screwdriver. If it is held by a clip or magnet, use a small flathead screwdriver to pry up the plate.
    • 3 Thoroughly clean inside all the openings, using a vacuum with crevice attachment. Remove any stubborn lint, and use tweezers to take out any thread that is wound around the parts.
    • 4 Clean the teeth on the gears, using the tip of a round toothpick to loosen the grime. Vacuum to remove it.
    • 5 Lubricate all the moving parts. Use white lithium grease on the gears, and sewing machine oil on the other parts.
    • 6 Reassemble the machine and plug it in.
Tightening or replacing the drive belt
    • 1 Remove the top cover, bottom cover and handwheel cover, using a screwdriver to take out the screws.
    • 2 Inspect the drive belt. If it is slack, use your screwdriver to loosen the screws that hold the motor in place, then follow step 4, below, to increase the belt's tension. If the belt is cracked or broken, get a replacement from your sewing machine supplier.
    • 3 Install the new belt. Loosen the motor-mounting screws, and shift the motor toward the handwheel so you can slip the belt over the parts.
    • 4 Shift the motor away from the handwheel to increase the belt's tension, then tighten the motor-mounting screws and check the tension. The belt should flex no more than 1/2 inch (12 mm). If it is too loose, increase the tension.
    • 5 Reinstall the covers and plug in the machine.

Kenmore Sewing Machine Drop-in Bobbin Tension Adjusting Problems

looped stitches are usually caused by improper tension. when the loop is on the upper side, it may be corrected by loosening the top tension or by tightening the lower tension (turn the tension screws on the bobbin a hair at a time)

since using the machine only a few times it is best to clean the machine from dust (can use a can of air) blow air into the bobbin area and between the tension disks and under the throat plate.

make sure the machine is threaded correctly and bobbin is evenly threaded

Bobbin tension

I had the opposite problem it may be that the lower tension is too tight (mine was too loose).
To fix it you have to take the bobbin case out completely to access the tension adjustment screw. - Remove the 2 screws holding the metal plate with a nickel and remove the plastic piece over the bobbin case - there is a small metal lever on the lower left side that needs to be pressed down. You can then remove the bobbin case. There are 3 screws - the center one is the tension adjustment. It was painted green on my machine.  It appears that it is not a regular setting change, but a bad adjustment from the factory. So if you don't feel comfortable doing all that returning the machine for another will likely fix the issue.

Singer 9410 Bobbin

I had the same problem and after looking on here and finding no answer I went back to my machine and found out what the problem was...ok, where the bobbin case sets in,the metal plate beside it needs to be fitted right close to the bobbin case, so loosen the screws(just two of them) that are in the plate(DO NOT REMOVE JUST LOOSEN) and slide the metal plate over some just enough to fit snug...NOT TOO TIGHT... if its seems to sew too tight loosen it a bit It worked for me, GOOD LUCK
