It sounds more like camera motion than a focus problem. Make sure you don't move the camera when you press the shutter button. It's easy to **** the camera when you press the shutter button quickly.

Does the background look blurry? I suspect what you are getting is called motion blur. You need a faster shutter speed, which is either possible by having more light in the room or a faster lens.
If you want to try to get the best shot (with your existing equipment) possible of sports under low light conditions you may have to set some controls manually.
Use the Av mode, and set the Av number to the smallest one possible.
Adjust the ISO by pushing the ISO button on the back and setting it to the highest value (note: this results in a "noisy" picture, you will sacrifice color and see some specks in dark areas)
Set your frame advance to continuous by pressing the button on the left of the circle and setting it to the one that looks like multiple pictures.
And set your focus to "AI Servo" by pressing the "AF" button to the right of the circle and choosing "AF Servo".
Then shoot away.

You could have cracked the lens, damage the focus or a number of other things but the lens and focus are most likely. check your lens for scratches if there is none and no cracks take it to your nearest camera store or buy new good luck!

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
