The microwave makes a humming noise when heating/cooking but then the humming sound go away and the microwave is no longer heating/cooking. It is acting almost like when you defrost meat in the microwave. It turns on the heating/cooking and the it turns off the heating/cooking. Sometimes we try heating something up for 30-45 seconds but the heating/cooking never turned on so the food is still cold.
Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:
- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose conneciton on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part
If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Having the same problem. Wasn't there a recall a couple years ago related to this? I never acted on it.
Confirmed my microwave is under recall, a fire hazard, scheduled for repair. If your serial no. starts with XC you're affected. Visited the website to check your microwave. http://repair.whirlpool.com/MWR/index.ht...
