Why doesn't the open/close button on DVD player of DVD/VCR combo work?
There is no noise at all, no shuttling, nothing. The power on unit works with the VCR, yet within seconds of pressing the vcr/dvd mode to dvd it will switch back to vcr on its own. Also though , while in the dvd mode, albeit only lasts for seconds the open/close button will not work nor does it make any noise whatsoever. How do l get the dvd open/close button to work, and the dvd side to work at all? There is no dvd stuck in the player, yet again that is a moot point because l cant even get the door open nor again will the system stay on dvd mode for more than15 seconds. Also, please remember that the vcr is in perfect working order accepting, playing, and ejecting tapes so the problem does not appear to be there at all.My concern is with dvd player-period unless otherwise learned from an experts advice/knowledge. Please consider all the info given and if not clear enough please let me know what needs to be known. Thank you.

There are rubber belts inside that run the mechanism. They dry out and stretch. Measure the belt length in mm, then divide it by 2 and subtract 2-3mm to account for the stretch. You can order square belts on amazon

Combo units have this essential flaw--if one half fails you are usually done especially if the DVD side fails.
If Door does not open either a disc is jammed inside the mechanism or the mechanism is out of alignment or damaged.
Good argument against buying these units--DVD individual parts are rarely sold--only (if available) would be the entire DVD unit itself--not cost effective to repair.
DVD players are now real cheap (see some for as little as $20) so if not a simple jammed disc or something like that buy a DVD player.
There is a small belt under the loading tray which would have gone slack ( loose ) and the sound you hear is it slipping on the motor pulley. If you are confident you can remove the mechanism and turn it upside down and access this belt. Dismantle only if you can get the spare belt or your efforts will be in vain.
Combo's, Screen will say VCR Lock Activated. During stop or power off, hold the stop/eject button on the unit for at least seven seconds.
Combo's, Another method With unit on and no cassette inside, hold the rec/time button on the front of unit for 7 seconds.
CTV's Lock Mode Only the on/off button will work, the others have no effect. Press the action and power buttons at the same time on the front of the set for 10 seconds or so.
LCD TV's, Lock Mode If customer forgot Parental Lock Code, unit must be re-initialized. Press and hold the Volume down button on the front panel, press the OK button on the remote for 5 seconds.
DVD's Lock Mode Setting Method The sales demonstration lock function is set by simultaneously pressing the "POWER" button of DVD Player on the remote control unit and the "STOP" button on the main unit. ("LOCKED" is displayed when the lock function is engaged.) Release Method The function can be released using the same procedure as for setting. If the remote control unit is not at hand, the function can be released by using the same method as for player initialization (pressing the "PAUSE," "SKIP/SEARCH<<"and "OPEN/CLOSE" buttons simultaneously).
VHS-DVD Recorder (DMR-ES40V), Forgotten Ratings Password From the Owners manual: Open tray, Keep Pressing Rec and Play/X 1.3 buttons on the remote for 5 or more seconds. Another servicer found resetting to defaults worked well. (VCR>DVD Dub) + (Open/Close) + (DVD Rec)

General
Problems Player won’t work (locks up) •
Try unplugging the AC power cord and plugging it back in. •
Reset the DVD/VCR: on the front of the unit, press and hold the STANDBY/ON
button while you press and hold the STOP button—wait at least 3 seconds before
you release both of the buttons. You’ll need to set up your menu preferences
because this Reset Procedure returns the DVD/VCR’s menus to the factory default settings and also erases the
contents of the Disc Library.
This unit has seperate power supplies for the DVD and VCR side and the DVD side supply seems prone to failure. I have not isolated the cause, but can tell you this will require a component level repair. Unless you are a tech you may as well buy a new unit.
