Tip & How-To about Building Materials

Craftsman belt drive garage door opener intermittent

My opener was flaky- intermittently going on and off. I could bang it and it would do the same thing so this suggested a loose connection somewhere. This wasn't a unit with the battery backup.

Safety note- don't take apart unless you first unplug the entire unit!!! I took it apart and there were two circuit boards- a logic board and a power supply board (latter was smaller of the two). I took out the power supply board and examined the solder joints on the back. I found one that was cracked (this soldered a connector pin), and another that looked like it wasn't good (not shiny). I resoldered and this fixed the problem.

Another time my wall control acted up (this has the IR sensor and buttons). There is not much room around the screws on the backside for connecting the wires. One of the wires was a little long and shorting out to a nearby component.

Hope this helps someone with similar problems.

gateway nv59c shuts off when picked up

On battery or AC? I would suspect a loose connection, AC cord, AC jack. Has it been damaged, dropped, banged, jarred, etc. Obviously something is loose/broken causing intermittent loss in the power circuit. If you have a multimeter you can troubleshoot the issue from AC outlet to AC jack, then you have to open the laptop or take it to a qualified computer tech. Is the laptop under warranty? If so Get in touch with Gateway at once, to repair/replace. Don't delay.

I have an intermittent problem with the power going out on my craftsmen opener. If I bang on the end where the wires are attached the lights come on and it works for a while. I opened it up and all the connections look fine. Any ideas?

You need to remove the logic board and check for loose connections on the printed circuit board especially around the small transformer. The logic board is on the end you are banging.

PC restarts automatically when I touch any edge of the PC. Only happened 4 times during one battery session. Can't replicate.

Open the memory panel and see if the memory card is fully seated. I've seen intermittent restarts from loose connections.

Is the side SD memory slot empty. If not, check all ports and cards for defects that would cause flaky restarts including loose battery thumb latch.

Otherwise (unlikely) you could be in a very dry atmosphere and conducted a small spark right when the notebook was booting up and corrupted the code.

any new info or status?

Driver's side window works intermittently. Some days it works perfectly and some days all you hear is the relay clicking but the window will not go down. It just started about a week ago. Could it be a loose connection or maybe a flaky motor?

It certainly could be a bad connection, or even a broken wire in the harness to the door. If it operates intermittently when swing the door back and forth it could be the harness. If you hear a humming sound or some clicking sound from the door when the relay clicks it is a jammed motor. If no sound at all it could be the motor

Flaky Headphone Jack

Unfortunately the Zen Xtra was designed poorly and this problem tends to happen sometime along the life of the product.  As you suspected, the problem is the solder joint and the only solution is to open the player and resolder it yourself.  As long as you are careful, you shouldn't have any problems.  The hardest part is trying to get the thing back together after you took it apart:  Just be sure not to loose any of the pieces.  Detailed instructions with photos are located here:
