The fan motor assy stopped working in Whirlpool OTR microwave 2 weeks ago and I'm waiting for a new fan but meanwhile kept using the microwave for quick warm ups, but yesterday we were heating something for 5 mins and it stopped working for awhile, I assume it overheated due to no fan to cool it down, it now works again for short periods, I wont use it for more than 1 minute at a time .

Sounds like the magnetron is overheating. There is an automatically-resetable thermal circuit breaker attached to the magnetron. Most likely your problem is caused by either a cooling fan that is not running, or is running too slow (caused by gummed-up bearings). In some over-the-range (OTR) microwave ovens, the exhaust fan is run at a slow speed to cool the magnetron, and if it's bearings get gummed up, it won't run on the slow speed. But if it's a new OTR microwave, then the exhaust fan may be pointing the wrong way. (It is rotatable, depending on the installation). For example, if it is pointing up, but you don't have an exhaust vent over the microwave, then the air has nowhere to go, and the magnetron will overheat.
see this test . God bless youThis microwave oven repair is only for over the range(OTR) models. First, with microwave still installed, gain access to the control board and check for voltage from the fan relay. If you are not getting voltage from the fan relay on the control board, and your display says fan is on, then you need a new control board. Again, this microwave oven repair is for OTR models. If you know your light bulbs are good and your display is telling you that they should be on, check the light relay on your control board. If no voltage is found at that relay, then replace the control board. Otherwise your problem is in the light socket, wiring, or wire connectors. You can get to all of that by unscrewing 6-8 screws under the unit and taking the bottom panel off.If voltage is present and the wiring that you can see looks good, then you will have to take the unit down and test for voltage at the fan itself. If the voltage is present there, then test the motor itself and/or start capacitor for the motor. The fan motor assembly will slide out of the top of the unit after you take it down and unscrew 2 screws. Below, in the list of component testing, you will see how to test the motor and start capacitor. get the part from www.repairclinic.com
They have no battery that I'am aware of, the problem is in the keypad control board. The long storage tends to cause issues if the parts have not been energized for a long time, capacitors start to deform overtime and they are the most likely to fail.
Once i opened up the microwave, I found that some kind of capacitor or something (had two wires going to it) had fell down on top of the fan. I had to rig the plastic mounting bracket and re-attach it to a panel inside. That took care of the rubbing noise. It turned out that some one had unplugged the wire that powered the turntable. That took care of that. it seems to work fine now. Steve
FIRST ,,MICROWAVE OVENS ARE REALLY SAFTY MINDED AND THATS A GOOD THING....THERE ARE USUALLY THREE DOOR SWITHCES NEXT THE KEYBOARD--THE ONE ON TOP AND THE ONE ON BOTTOM ARE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SWITCHES,,YOUR PROBLEM SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF THESE IS NOT MAKING CONNECTION..YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO PRESS 'DOWN" WITH A LITTLE PRESSURE ON THE DOOR AFTER CLOSING TO SEE IF THE FAN WILL START,,,IF YOU NOTICE --THERE ARE 2 LATCHES(HOOKS) COMING OUT OF THE DOOR,,WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED,THOSE LATCHES ARE SPRING LOADED AND MAKE CONTACT ON THOSE SAFTY SWITCHES....THIS IS NOT A CUSTOMER REPAIR--MICRO'S ARE JUST TO DANGEROUS WHEN YOU TAKE THE COVER OFF--IF THIS DOES BRING THE FAN BACK ON--YOU GOT A BAD DOOR SWITCH AND SHOULD BE A REASONABLE REPAIR
THE OTHER SOLUTION STILL WOULD BE A CONNECTION PROBLEM ON THE KEYBOARD ITSELF-THE WIRES JUST PLUG ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD BEHIND THE KEYBOARD---STILL A EASY REPAIR--GOOD LUCK TUNICA
