sounds like your sound card is probably going bad. you should likely have some available PCI slots on that motherboard. You can purchase a cheap replacement like the one below:

Then just install it and its drivers. Go into Control panel >> system >> device manager >> sound, video and game controllers etc... and disable the onboard one. You can do so by Right clicking on the old one and clicking disable. This will prevent any conflicts.

the best and cheapest up grade is RAM. Make sure you have all the memory your machine can handle. A quick look say it can handle Core™ 2 Extreme QX9770(3.2GHz,12 MB) And it has a PCI-express slot so you have a big chiose of video cards.Are you using the machine for gaming?

it should work fine .there may be woring instaling prosses. some high configreation computer not work it means in ashort periode xp- can crash as in 4 gb ram. please try sp -3 .it can help u.
