The cassettes have a little tab you pull on which folds flat afterwards.
Disconnect from the power.
Open the cassette cover on the right side with a coin or with a screwdriver. Free the opening to the cassette housing by moving the slide downwards for inserting the upper cassette and upwards for inserting the lower cassette. (to insert, fit the cassette gently and firmly into its housing and fold the tab flat.) You will need to reverse to remove them. I've got a feeling they can get pretty firm when they have been in there for years, most people would add the extra cassettes and never remove them.
SOURCE: Elna Carina Zig'Zag Stitch Issue
Over time, and especially when not used, there is a likelihood of dust and old oil forming a sort of glue, or clag....
Remove the needle for safety, then, when you have the setting on Zig zag, gently push the needle arm to the opposite side of the zig stitch.......release the needle arm, and if it springs back quickly, it is fine, if it moves slowly, or almost not at all, then the clag needs removing with application of few drops of methylated spirit to start, at the sort of piston affair that shifts needle arm L & R .....move the needle arm back & forth until it frees up, a drop of oil to finish.........if almost seized, may require leaving overnight after using a penetrating lubricant if it is really resistant....I have had them on the bench for 3 days with manual manipulation a few times each day before they finally come good.

SOURCE: Elna 6003Q Sewing Machine won't snap out of bobbin winding mode
I had the same problem and fixed it myself. Remove the portion of the housing that coincides with the bobbin winder. You will need to remove two screws to do this--one is just to the upper left of the bobbin winder itself, and one is hidden under the handle on the left side of the machine (lift the handle, and look on the machine on the left side.) It takes some coaxing to remove the housing, but it can be done--be gentle. If you need to, remove the housing on the left side of the machine that covers the needle assembly. This will make it a bit easier, but still, be gentle.)
After removing the housing, you will see a black metal piece with a elongated slot and a screw adjacent to the bobbin winder mechanism. Unscrew the screw a turn or two, and slide the piece to the other side. Tighten gently. Turn your machine on, and move your bobbin winder back and forth and watch the screen change from bobbin winding to the main straight stitch screen. Now, do a brief Dance of Joy. I hope this helps.
SOURCE: Husqvarna Prisma 980 decorative stitch cassettes don't work
Hi,
On that machine, the cassettes aren't actually computer chips. Each cassette has a little spot of white on a certain little area you must find (top right I'm pretty sure). Look in the machine at that point. There is a sensor that looks for that white spot, and as it identifies it, it changes stitches according to that cassette. Either the sensor is blocked, gone bad, or you can put a fresh coat of white paint on with white out. I hope this helps.

If you bend over the front of the machine, you will see a slider switch on the back of the machine, and there is a small "button" at the bottom right of the switch (your right). If you push this button down, you can slide the slider switch to your right and the feed dogs will go up.
