Scanner error 5

Will not scan documents and hence Fax, Copy, and scan - no longer function.
However when connected to a PC device will print OK .......and in colour too !
Display advises "Turn of and then turn on again" to resolve the problem.......does NOT work.
Can anyone solve this problem? N.B. Malfunction occurred just outside of the one year Manufacturer's warranty !!!

    Hi Regrind,

Tried your solution 2 posted on 21/01/08 but without success - my HP2840 all-in one printer /scanner/copier/fax still fails to respond properly. The dreaded rattle of the scanning gantry upon start-up in still present and consequently the device ONLY prints (from a computer input -all other functions are impossible). Yes, even the useless advice (from HP) on the devices display screen to turn device off and then on again (ie.re-boot) is still displayed!

Thanks anyway for your advice - my device certainly is frustrating........

    Regards

    Hello,

I also tried the solution on 1/24/08. I couldn't get the gear to turn at all with my finger. So, I still have the problem.

  • Anonymous Jan 24, 2008

The problem, at least on my printer, is intermittent. I posted the first "solution" which seemed to work, but then the problem returned. I left the printer off overnight and it worked fine. The problem returned yesterday. I tried Regrind's solution, but it didn't work. I tried it again - same result. Turned it off one more time and then it worked fine.

finally called a HP trained technician to come look at the machine. He said it is a problem with this printer and HP knows about it. If it was still i warranty, HP was letting people trade up for $100. If not in warranty, you are out of luck. Scanner was fried on mine and it was out of warranty. So, I am out of luck.

It's a problem with the scanner unable to "see" its home sensor. The home sensor is a black & white film strip stuck onto the flatbed glass, just above where the scanner head homes. The printer needs to "see" the two little black 1mm square bumps in the white area. When the scanner head "homes", as it just disappears under the plastic it should move left and right as it looks at the home strip. If it keeps going and chatters at the right-stop it didn't see the home strip.

This can be caused by dirty mirrors, or lens in the scanner head (clean them);
Low or off color light (replace the bulb or high voltage power board on bottom of scanner head);
Broken, cracked, or loose scanner head ribbon cable (replace or repair);
Dirty or crooked home sensor film strip (I had one of these: the black & white film strip stuck to the flatbed glass was slightly crooked, it doesn't take much!)
Dirty slide bar (clean & oil);
Bad stepper motor, bad scanner PCBA (replace).

Carcher777 comment is helpful. After cleaning everything internal, you need to put back the glass in order for the scanner head to see the strip.

  • Anonymous Aug 24, 2011

I have found the strip position is critical. You cal peel off the strip from the top side of the glass (careful not to kink or damage it) and tape it to the bottom of the glass with clear tape. You can adjust its position until the scanner head calibrates properly. Fill in any spots with a black marker if it doesn't come off the glass cleanly. The glass comes off of the top cover by pushing two plastic clips out of the way.

  • ac0675 Mar 07, 2016

The scanner glass is loose, take the glass top off and there is a tab the glass must but up aganist in order for the scanner to go home. it comes from slamming the top shut

I'm on my second printer, and my third scanner 5 error. I had to write to the president of HP to get the replacement printer I'm using now. Agree this is a design error from my own experience with it. HP is sending yet another scanner unit as a replacement, but while waiting, we had some important docs that had to go out today, so I took the entire top off (lift off the ADF and unplug it, then unscrew all visible screws, pry off keypad, two more screws, lift off glass). I 'fiddled" with the scanner on its track while turning the unit off and on, pushing the scanner back and forth against its track. You can hear the gears slipping inside while doing all of this. Even though the scanner 5 error came back each time, when I put everything back together, it worked! Who knows for how long.

The machine has been discontinued, so don't let HP tell you they aren't having trouble with it. It's functionally excellent, but highly unreliable. Ironically I've never been able to install the software right with either the original or the replacement, so the scanner has never worked with my PC - we (HP and Norton) think Norton prevented some of the install, and the problem is so deep in the bios or wherever the hell it conflicted, I gave up trying a year ago. Software installed fine on my laptop, but first I stopped all Symantec services before installing, and that's how I can. The scanning software functionality is also pretty useless compared to other, cheaper products.

Whatever you do, don't pay for a repair. Either fight like hell with HP (multiple calls and letters to Mark Hurd, President), or buy another brand. I spent over a thousand to buy it, over $500 to repair it the first time, and probably more than a thousand in toner and drums.

Still thinking about whether I'll ever buy another HP after 20 years recommending them. Really too bad.

Try this one - it worked for me. None of the on/off business was successful as you know. The rattle seemed mechanical to me like the roller/gear was not engaged. I opened up the scanning lid, used a small allen wrench and pulled the screw at the left side of the frame that holds a 1 inch wide by 12 inch long piece of glass. I stuck my finger inside the housing and began to roll the gear/rubber belt to move the scanner bulb assembly towards the left side as far as you can go. Then, turn the machine off and on. That seemed to reset it.. so far so good. Everything is back to normal. I was ready to junk it... get physical instead! Good luck and let me know if that worked for you.

I had the same problem exactly as others have described. scanner errors 5 and 6.
error 5 seems to be something to do with the glass being dirty. on mine, if i take the ADF and glass off I will get error 5. clean it and put it back on and error 5 goes away.
Unfortunately, error 6 came on.
1. i looked at the underside of the scanner mirrors and they had a clearly defined blue and pink lines. as the thing was junk anyway, i tried cleaning these mirrors. the lines came off easily.
2. i turned it off and unpluged it (why not). i moved the scanner to the left as others have described.
3. putting the glass cover back on and turning it back on and the error 6 has now gone away.
good luck.

This error partially because the reflect mirror and glass are not clean enough. As others say, open up and clean it may help. but not always.

Since there is another cause, major one, the light bulb getting old and not bright enough, this is a design flaw of most HP scanner, the light bulb has been turn on for too long, as default, 2840 will let light remain on 12hours(min you can adjust to 4hours, still too long), pretty much if you use the scanner or fax once a day, it'll be turned on whole day, this is for shorten waiting time for each use of scanner/fax. But all CCFL has a life limit(usually 10000hours, that's about year and 2 month). And in scanner, it's need a certain light temp, that means when the light not bright enough, scanner won't work properly, in scanner the ccfl's life will be counted 20%-50% less than LCD back light. At this situation, 2840 will not be able to stablely homing the scanner head--it use reflect light signal(there's a special black area under glass for this purpose) instead a light diode sensor to reduce cost. so the error 5 coming. When you clean the glass, it'll improve the light reflectivity, so may or may not help accroding the light bulb remaining life. Turn off CCFL(shout down 2840) for a while may get a little life back as all CCFL's chemical stuff may tired for long time working, that's the HP solution.

And in more worse situation, the scanner light bulb warming up won't finish as the the light bulb getting pink. in this stage, if you can change the light bulb (24cm long and 2.5/3mm in diameter as I remember), you can fix the problem without change whole Q3948-60191(flatbed unit)/Q3948-60210(SCANNER HEAD UNIT).

For longer time, it'll getting even worser, the light bulb won't be turned on any more, the warming up won't stop, and the scanner head will keep knock the end of scanner body to make clucking noise. That's because 2840 can't get any light signal feedback from scanner head, it'll let motor keep runing. For now, there're two possibles, one you luck, light bulb went away, change it, solve the problem, another just not luck, the some part on scanner head burned off, you have to change the whole scanner head or whole flatbed. that's because 2840 keep trying to warmming up the light bulb which need more current than regular working condition. those parts on scanner head are SMT almost can't fixed without proper tools.

Good luck

  • Anonymous Feb 08, 2009

I checked the light bulb size, that'll be about 245mmx2.5mm

  • SubaruB4 Jun 02, 2013

Thanks for the info on the CCFL bulb size!

I ran into this article and thought I'd post. I have been repairing HP machines for several years and this was a new one for me. It is not a software issue, but it may be related to the cleanliness of the machine internals. The x,y position of the scanner arm is simply out of wack and will not calibrate.

As posted before simply remove the top scanner module, and then on the scanner face plate remove the star screws. Reach in and gently move the scanner arm to the center of the unit. This seems to make it recalibrate. I also blew the interior out with compressed air. What is causing the issue I do not know, but once again it is probably related to age or cleanliness of the internals.

Try this guys

clean under the glass unplug all of the wires and get a can of air spray and spray the leads and the adf plug in too. this worked for me, but I really didn't like paying the money I did for a problem that I believe HP program to help (IMP)

  • Anonymous Jul 08, 2008

take the ADF off just unhook the two sides (don’t unscrew it from its arms) and unplug it from the screener

There are 6 screws to take out, 4 you can easily see and two you can’t see. For the two you can’t see are underneath the “control-panel faceplate”. The faceplate will come off by just pulling on one end and slowly pulling all the way up.

not sure what you call it, but underneath the screener’s bulb you will see a mirror. Take a Q-tip and clean it then take a can of air and spray it. After you do this, put the screener bulb unit at the left end of the unit, don’t go all the way over just where it would go if it was working right.

Put top back on, (you don’t need to put the ADF back on yet.

Turn on hp unit and see if it works. If it doesn’t work try it again. I’ve been working on this for three days, and I’ve got the unit to work fine after I cleaned it.

I have found the real problem of this machine, it's an engneer mistake from hp.After you take out the cover where the scanner ***. sits, look underneeth and check for 2 flat cable, take a close look at the widest one, look where the cable make a 90 degree, mine had a little cut, look's like burnt, the first wire in this flat cable was 98 percent cut, I have been able to fix it with tape, but it wont work a long time. The problem is that nothing hold down that wire , when the scanner pass over it over and over hem ake a mark on the side of that wire and after a while it cuts-it.

The cable doen't come alone, you gonna have to change the complete scanner. this only for a little double sided tape forgotten in the production ... when you want to do cheap you cut mon tape ?????

My suggestion if you have a lot of those, open-it up and go put a peace of good tape or a sticker to old the cables downs preventing damage.

Hope it will help you. Alain montreal

YOU ARE RIGHT! That is the problem, but the ribbon cable is very difficult to repair. I managed to fix it the first time, but then the problem came back. I took it apart and found out that the cable had the 3 top lines broked. I'm looking for a new cable. I'm sure a technician can make it!

  • djtentman Oct 15, 2010

Does anyone know where to get a replacement ribbon cable? I'm not having good luck with it

  • djtentman Oct 15, 2010

Hurray, I found the cable part number. It is RH2-5524

  • Anonymous Aug 08, 2011

The part number of the cable is not RH2-5524!!! Don't buy this cable, it is for another part of the printer!

I had the same problem when I purchased a new laptop with Vista. I downloaded a driver from HP and then started getting the scanner error 5 message. It made those rattling noises. I went back to my old laptop, removed the 2840 program, and re-installed the program. When the printer initialized after this, there was no problem. You might try that.

One more thing. The problem did re-occur after I turned the printer on and then off. Re-installing the software didn't fix it. But, I turned it off over night and then turned the printer back on in the morning. Problem was not there.

This worked for me- SAME EXACT PROBLEM BASICALLY
Try this one - it worked for me. None of the on/off business was successful as you know. The rattle seemed mechanical to me like the roller/gear was not engaged.

Had a tech come out to fix the "Scanner Error 5" problem.

He replaced the whole scanner top. Works fine now. (Until the warranty is up;) There is a built-in problem with this printer and the only fix is to pay for a whole new top end.

Buying another printer fixes the problem permanently. Bought a new HP inkjet network all-in-one printer with 2 year no-questions-asked replacement warranty for $200. Alot less money to operate also.

I tried "Regrind"'s solution and it didn't seem to work. In frustration, I tried it again and the problem disappeared!!....at least for now. We'll see how long it lasts. Thanks Regrind, I was about ready to jetison the whole thing.

Regrind's solution worked for me but I got tired of having to go through the steps every time the machine was switched off or there was a power failure.

My solution: drill a small hole in the casing on the right hand side and insert a skewer or similar item in the hole as the machine and move the scan head to the left before it initialises.
Saves having to dismantle scanner each time!

A full feature software and driver package for Windows 7 is not available for your product. However, the Windows 7 operating system installed on your computer contains a basic driver solution for your product. With the basic driver, some of the advanced product features are not available. You can print from a software program, and import and view images on a memory card, if your product has a memory card slot. With this basic driver, the buttons on the product do not function and some of the advanced product features are not available. How to Scan a Document in Windows 7 By Greg Harvey The Windows Fax and Scan utility enables you to scan documents and pictures. Before you can scan documents and pictures, you must have a scanner installed on your computer. Your scanner must be listed in the Devices section of the Devices and Printers Control Panel window.

To check to see if your scanner is properly installed, open the Device Stage. Choose Start?Devices and Printers. If Windows doesn't automatically find your scanner, you can manually add it in the Devices and Printers window by clicking the Add a Device button in the toolbar and following the wizard's commands.

  1. Choose Start?All Programs?Windows Fax and Scan.

Windows 7 opens the Windows Fax and Scan window.

  2. Click the Scan button in the Navigation pane, then click the New Scan button on the toolbar.

The New Scan dialog box for your scanner opens.

  3. Use the settings on the right to describe your scan.

By letting the computer know what you're scanning, its color profile, and the type of file you plan to create, you enable Windows Fax and Scan to create the highest quality scan.

  4. Click the Preview button to see what your document will look like.

    Make any last minute changes.

  5. If you're happy with the preview, click the Scan button.

Windows scans the document and presents you with an image of your document.

  6. Click the Save As button and complete the necessary information.

Enter the filename, the type of graphics file you want saved, and then click the Save button.

To automatically forward the document you've just scanned as an attachment to a new fax message, click the Forward as Fax button.

The scan feature in the Windows Fax and Scan utility is set primarily to scan text documents. If you want to scan a photograph or other graphic, you're better off doing that directly within the Windows Live Photo Gallery.

I CAN`T SEND A FAX

Fax machines are sorta like printers, sorta like scanners, and sorta like dial up modems all wrapped into one expensive box.
1. First thing to make sure of is that you are hooked to a phone line. most fax machines have a phone handset that you can make calls from. Call someone and make sure that works. If So, you are able to connect to phone networks, and should have no trouble sending or receiving data. If you have a dead line or no sound, check the line and check the power. (its always the easy stuff that is overlooked, just check it and make sure).
2. If this fax machine has computer interface, (usb port or parallel cable port), see if you can scan with it. Drop a document into the scan area and see if the computer can scan an image from the scanner. If the scanner works, you can scan images into the fax machine to be sent to the fax number. (If your fax machine does not have a scan to computer feature, skip this.)
3. if your fax machine has a print from pc feature, try to print a document to it from your computer. If you can print, then the printer works, and you can receive faxes. (if your fax machine does not have a pc printing feature, skip this)
4. Here is how a typical fax machine works. You place the document or image into the scanner feed area. You press a big button that usually says "fax" and then, a screen pops up saying to dial the number. You dial the number and press SEND. once you press Send, the machine will scan the document, dial the number and sing a little dial up modem song awaiting a response from the receiving machine. the receiving machine acknowledges the fax, and the singing is no longer audible (but it continues because the modem song is actually data transmission/reception). after about 20-60 seconds, the fax completes and the call ends. As for the particular model you have, the functions should be about the same, though the buttons and arrangements may be different. FYI, you can send a fax straight from the PC too, if you have a dial-up fax/modem card.

I want to copy a document

How often do you need to "copy" documents. Do you have a document scanner?  Your Epson is a printer.  You'll need a scanner to scan a document into your PC then you can print it out on your Epson.  If you only need a copy once in a blue moon, and you don't have a scanner, save yourself a few bucks and just go to Kinko's or maybe even your local grocery store or library and run your copies there.  They probably cost about 25 cents a page.  A new scanner will run you about $100 bucks.  If you decide that you need a scanner, you might even want to consider investing in a multi function printer which will scan-print-copy-fax.  Hope this helps.  If so, please remember to rate my solution.  Thanks.

Will not make a copy

If it won't copy, it is unlikely to handle faxes either since those functions use the same scanner. If your received faxes are coming out blank, then it is a problem with the ink system; if you can get faxes printed but not copy a document, the scanner may be at fault.
Have someone send you a fax to check this function (printing) and then try sending one back to check the scanner.
If either one fails, then hyou know where the problem lays.

Initialization failed - Unable to acquire TWAIN-compliant device

Hello,

I have seen your message stating that "Initialization failed - Unable to acquire TWAIN-compliant device" error is received when trying to connect USB-Parallel type to your Laptop.

Well,  Printer  Panasonic UF4100, recommends to use only " Printer/Scanner Interface as Bi-directional Parallel (IEEE1284) " means you need to use Parallel cable to connect Printer to the Computer/Notebook.  You may receive some communication error messages if you are using a  "PORT REPLICATOR CABLE"( USB TO PARALLEL connector).  The error message that you have received is related to the communication error. Futher, if you use same USB- Parallel cable for long time the Printer Hardware functionality might go bad, since Printer memory gets confused and will not read or detect the Cable , since it is not a cable to use  mentioned by Panasonic Manufacturer.

Let me tell you, general functionality of Printer like Printing would work even if you use USB-Parallel cable. But it is not a case with Scanner and Fax functionality.

Hence, I recommend you to use only Parallel cable to connect your Printer to the Laptops.

I hope that this will resolve the issue for you.

You can email me at [email protected] if you need further assistance.

Bye.
