For the Firmware update go to Menu, then Set up, then Help, then quickly type "1397" this will open up the Engineers page. Look at the top of the page at Code 1 and Code 2, what ever one say's (Current) and this will appear in brackets is the firmware you are using. See what firmware you are using. If it is 7.04 Press the Back button this will take you back one page to settings,Although green wont appear as an option press the green button,And press the Yellow button for Software Revert.This will upgrade to Firmware 7.09

The easiest way is to through the CC button on your remote control. But remember that not all channel have close caption features included in their programming. Try changing channel to isolate issue.
