After reading how to fix my compressor i need to know where to find the starter capacitor and what it looks like . i also would like to know where to get one and about how much they cost

Need to know size of start capacitor for compressor fan start is 5

OK there are "start capacitors" & "run capacitors". I think you are after the run capacitor. A start capacitor KIT is only for the compressor. If you are after the capacitor that looks like the fans capacitor that can be tough. I've seen a lot of capacitors that are faded and can't be read. The only way is to get the compressor model number from the compressor its self. Usually on top of it but may be on the side. AND THE MAKER (Copeland, bristol...) Then you need to call some local parts houses (for a/c or refrigeration) and give them make & model # to see if they can get you the info. They probably won't sell the part to you but try. If its a Copeland compressor, the app store has an app called "xref" that is awsome. Has worked for me %95 of the time when I have had the same problem.

IN DOOR FAN WILL BLOW BUT NOT THE COMPRESSOR

What I would do is see if maybe a terminal on the compressor is burnt. Easy fix. Looked up the model number to no avail. If you have separate capacitors for fan and compressor I would look for a swollen failed capacitor. Check and see if the compressor termials all have continuity with each other. If you read an open circuit between any 2 terminals on the compressor then the compressor is shot

I've made some additional checks in the air conditioner. After checking the capacitor, it appears to be okay. The compressor input winding measures 2.6 ohms. The starter assist unit when measured...

Never ohmed a capacitor. But, your compressor should not need the start cap. Take it off completely and run machine. Not sure of your problem either but to ohm a compressor, common to start + common to run should = start to run. To test a capacitor without the capabilities of mfd on your meter measure the amps on the herm wire × 2650 = ?? Divide that by the volts across common and herm. This will give you the mfd rating. Same with fan amps × 2650 =?? ÷ volts = mfds. Remember, not the amps off the contactor...the amp reading on the cap wire. Good luck!!

I just bought a new compressor for my a/c but the store sold me the wrong capacitor. I need a dual capacitor but don't know how to read microferets to get the correct capacitor. Can you help me?

Do you still have the original capacitor for the unit. They probably gave you the size you need for the compressor. It should have the microfarads printed on the capacitor. The symbol resembles a strange looking u. Then look at the capacitor that came with the unit and get the microfarad rating for the fan. Now you will have the too readings you need to get a capacitor. The fan motor may also have the size capacitor you need printed on the data plate. Let me know if you need more help.

I would like to connect a pressure switch to the motor starter

hi! there, single phase compressor motor need a starting capacitor base on the rated capacity in horse power,you can check this on the tag of the compressor motor how many horsepower was indicated,it should be for single phase motor starting capacitor has a capacity of micro farads.for a 1 horsepower = 15 to 18 micro farads stating capacitor if you have more than 1 horsepower you can basically proportion the value of capacitor you need or ask the dealer how much capacitor you need on your motor the connection of pressure switch with a four terminal should be connected both on common line L1 and running capacitor line L2 .if you open the cover of pressure switch there are 4 terminals,2 terminals are connected when normally close or no pressure they connected on series connection on the common line one terminal connected to common line of the compressor and the other terminal on L1 to the pushbutton switch to L1 supply line.the 2 other terminals also connected in series withe line capacitors L2 to yhr power supply line.hope this will help you a lot.just rate my fix thanks a lot.

Compressor buzzes loud & frig does not get cold

That can also mean that the starter is broken.which will be a cheaper fix than a new compressor.Also the capacitor can be broken and that will give the same results.

Buzzing sound and not cooling

it looks like you have a bad compressor. try replacing the ptc starter and the run capacitor, if it did not change anything, then you have a bad compressort that needs to be replaced. if those parts are expensive, test the capacitor by using an analog meter, test the terminal using the X100 resistance. the meter needle should indicate continuity and slowly goes back to infinity. then reverse the terminals to the test prods and it should happen again. then test the resistance of the ptc starter, it should have a reading between 20 ohms and 100 ohms. and there whould be no rattling sound inside the ptc starter. hope i was able to help...

Refrigerator buzzes & clicks

The only thing a capacitor does is 'kick' the compressor to start it. There is a box on the compressor containing the start relay. If it is defective or dirty, it might buzz. With the power off, find it, remove its cover and use some canned air to blow off any dirt inside. If that doesn't fix it, replace it. If there is a fan down there, be careful...and be sure it is working.

Compressor not running.

The fan running near the compressor is a good thing. If you suspect the starter it is the little box on the compressor. It usually consists of the overload and starter. You may also have a start capacitor, if you do you will need a multimeter that can check capacitors. Read the case, it should be say like a 5uf (micro farad) or something like that. They make kits to replace the starter/overload combo and also sell just a capacitor if that tests bad. I have seen some starters that are white in color with a small white plastic clip that holds the cover on go bad recently. If you have this type, take it off and shake it. If it rattles it's bad (really).
