This problem is caused by either the starter capacitor or the in-tank check valve. Ez to check. With no air in tank, start compressor; if motor hums or has difficulty suspect capacitor. If motor starts, partially fill tank and unplug the power. Check for air leaking at the pressure switch or air coming out of the air inlet (remove the air filter). If air leaking, replace check valve. If no air leaking, again let out all the from the tank and connect power. Allow the compressor to fill and shut-off. After the compressor fills, again listen for air leaking from the pressure switch unloader valve. If air continues to leak from unloader, replace the check valve. Good luck

If other people have problems with AIr leaking and have metal parts in the Check valve look for metal parts in the pressure hose IF your Check valve has problems it can be have metal pieces from out the menbrane or comming from one or some metal reducing adapters.

My ec12 runs for about 5 to 10 seconds then pops the circuit breaker

The EC12 actually draws approximately 15.5 amps when starting, so you are best served to use without extention cord on a 20 amp circuit. One thing that will improve operation, is to use 5w-50 full sinthetic oil. Fill to notch in dipstick. If possible change your overload switch to a 20 amp. It is currently a 15 amp. (cause right there for continual overload). I unplugged my reset button and added a piece of #12 coated wire as a jumper (do this at your own risk), but I've been fine for three years now. #12 wire fits right into the clips that attach to the reset button. Good luck.

The compressor reset button trips often, , it reads within the specs under load 8-10amp or reset at 12amp , I hard wired it and its been working fine for 20 days now , should I buy a new reset button

I have read that a thin or long extension cable can cause this. But you can also circuit breaker that plugs into the line before the device. And I would think the breaker on the main board would be enough protection.

What oil should I use if Hitachi oil isn't avalible?

On your next trip to Lowes look for Kobalt air compressor oil in the tool department. It sells for under $3 and works great for normal use. They also have Kobalt synthetic compressor oil for extreme conditions and longer use between oil changes. Sell for about $7. I also used Hitachi synthetic oil #19210b 8oz about $8 but hard to find. Kobalt synthetic costs less and works. Good luck.

My Hitachi EC12 builds pressure, shuts off, then air escapes

I have the same compressor with the same problem. I have temporarily eliminated the thermal reset with a piece of 12 gauge hard wire and it runs just fine. However, I do want to replace it before the warm weather come to the north. I tested the draw at 15.5 amps and the reset was a 17 amp. I am told by someone with superior electrical background that I need to install a 20 amp thermal reset in it's place. I have found that mine runs best when plugged directly into a 20 amp circuit and when using an extention cord I have a 10 guage cord that will carry the load needed to run the EC12. I have also changed to 100% synthetic oil.

Hitachi EC12 won't refill air after initial startup

hi there,
of course comparative cost buying and repairing make a cost reduction.if your compressor run smooth but tripping, make sure where on the right path of diagnosing of your compressor,we can check if the motor or compressor is shutting off the unit.disconnect the belt from pulley of the motor to compressor, run the motor if still tripping w/o load its better if you have calmp ammeter test,to check the current rating,if it is tripping motor is deffective replace the bearing.f motor is fine sr till tripping check the compressor also the crankcase bearing, replace worn out bearing.have a nice day dont forget to fix my rate.thanks a lot.
