Fig. Fig. 17: ... remove the belt from around one of the pulleys to remove the belt

WARNING Use caution when removing or installing the belt and make sure the tool does not slip from the drive belt tensioner or personal injury or damage to the belt tensioner and the belt may occur.

  1. Attach a 15mm socket or wrench to the bolt attaching the tensioner pulley.
  2. On all 3.0L (OHV) engines, rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.
  3. On 3.0L (DOHC) engines, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Install the drive belt on all the pulleys except the tensioner pulley.
  2. Rotate the belt tensioner as outlined in the removal procedure to relieve belt tension and install the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Make sure the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys. Make sure the spring keeper releases or improper belt tension will occur.

I would like to get a belt diagram for a 1988 pontiac firebird trans am

ADJUSTING V-Belts Fig. 1: A gauge is recommended, but the belt deflection may be checked using light thumb pressure 85341063.gif
Fig. 2: Loosening alternator pivot/adjustment bolt in order to tighten the belt 85341094.jpg Fig. 3: Apply tension to the belt being careful not to damage the case. While holding accessory in this position, tighten the pivot bolt. 85341095.jpg Fig. 4: Using a 1?2 in. ratchet, apply tension to the air conditioning belt while tightening the pivot bolt 85341096.jpg Belts are normally adjusted by loosening the bolts of the accessory being driven and moving that accessory on its pivot points until the proper tension is applied to the belt. The accessory is held in this position while the bolts are tightened. To determine proper belt tension, you can purchase a belt tension gauge or simply use the deflection method. To determine deflection, press inward on the belt at the mid-point of its longest straight run. The belt should deflect (move inward) 3?8 - 1?2 in. (10-13mm). A general rule for alternator belt tension is that the pulley should not be capable of being turned with hand pressure. Serpentine Belt On most newer vehicles, a single belt is used to drive all of the engine accessories formerly driven by multiple V-belts. The single belt is referred to as a serpentine belt. All the belt driven accessories are rigidly mounted with belt tension maintained by a spring loaded tensioner. Because of the belt tensioner, no adjustment is necessary. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION V-Belt Fig. 1: Loosen the component mounting and adjusting bolts slightly 85341064.gif
Fig. 2: Remove the belt by pushing the component toward the engine 85341065.gif
Fig. 3: Remove the drive belt 85341066.gif
Fig. 4: To tighten the belt, pull the component away from the engine and tighten the mounting bolts to specifications 85341067.gif
To remove a V-style drive belt, simply loosen the accessory being driven and move it on its pivot point to free the belt. Then, remove the belt. It is important to note that on engines with many driven accessories, several or all of the belts may have to be removed to get at the one to be replaced. Serpentine Belt Fig. 5: Serpentine belt tensioner - V6 engine 85341068.gif
Fig. 6: Serpentine belt tensioner - V8 engine 85341069.gif
A belt tensioner is used on these models, to maintain proper belt tension. To relieve belt tension, rotate the belt tensioner (using a 15mm socket) to relieve pressure on the belt. With tension relieved, the belt may then be removed from the engine. It is important to note the belt location at each pulley, to assure correct installation, and proper operation of the engine cooling system. A diagram may be helpful in denoting belt positioning. NOTE: Take care not to bend the tensioner when applying torque. Damage to the tensioner will occur. Maximum torque to load belt should not exceed 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm). prev.gif next.gif

2003 Hyundai Tiburon 2.7L MFI DOHC 6cyl

Inspection
Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.
Removal & Installation
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the engine splash shield.
  3. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to release the drive belt tension.
  4. Remove the drive belt from the alternator.
  5. Slowly release the drive belt tensioner.
  6. Remove the drive belt from the accessory drive pulleys.
To install:
  1. Install the drive belt to the accessory drive pulley.
  2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise.

Drive Belt Replacement ani_caut.gif WARNING: IF EQUIPPED, DO NOT ALLOW DRIVE BELT TENSIONER (6B209) TO SNAP BACK AS DAMAGE TO DRIVE BELT TENSIONER OR PERSONAL INJURY COULD RESULT.
NOTE: Minor cracks in the V-grooved portion of the serpentine drive belt (8620) are considered normal and acceptable. If the drive belt has chunks missing from the ribs, the drive belt should be replaced.

NOTE: Conditions requiring drive belt replacement are excessive wear, rib chunk-out, severe glazing, frayed cords or other conditions. Replace any drive belt exhibiting any of these conditions.

NOTE: When installing drive belt on pulley, make sure that all V-grooves make proper contact with pulleys.

Installing belt

here are the step by step instructions from the owners manual for your machine.
Disconnect cleaner from electrical outlet. WARNING: Agitator brush roll can start suddenly. Unplug cleaner before turning it over. Replacing Flat Belt Place handle in low position and turn cleaner over so bottom side is facing up. Remove the 6 screws as shown with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift off bottom plate. Replace belt if it is stretched, cut or broken. To check the flat belt. Removing Bottom Plate Removing Belt Positioning Belt Remove used belt from large pulley and discard. Reposition bottom plate and 6 Phillips head screws. Tighten screws securely. Insert agitator brush roll through belt and position belt in groove (A) on agitator brush roll. Inspecting V-Belt The V-belt is designed to last for a long time and is not normally replaced. However, if the V-belt is cracked, gouged or broken, it should be replaced. Slide flat belt off large pulley. To remove V-belt, slide back of belt over pulley (A). Then firmly pull on belt and “snap” it out. Discard used belt. To install new belt (with lettering on outside of belt), slide back of belt over pulley and pull front of belt toward groove next to pulley. Belt will “pop” into place. Flat Belt: What to Buy Use only genuine HOOVER belts with your cleaner. When purchasing a new belt, ask for Flat belt - HOOVER part No. 40201-271. V-Belt: What to Buy Use only genuine HOOVER belts with your cleaner. When purchasing a new belt, ask for V belt - HOOVER part No. 40201-200.
If you can't get the answer from this post, send me a message and I will try to walk you through this. I hope it helps.
