Air was not cooling but indoor fan was working. Checked outdoor unit, fan not working and hearing like a vibrating/humming sound.

If the condenser coil is very dirty it may have tripped a manual reset high pressure switch try and locate it on the condenser , Also check breaker feeding unit. If it comes back on turn off at the thermostat and wash condenser coil with a garden hose .

When the system is in the heating mode of operation and a dirty indoor coil is present, the system will have high sub-cooling?

subcooling is only a factor in the cooling mode. you convert the discharge psi to temperture and measure liquid line tempsrture. subtract difference it should be between 8 to 12 degrees.

Charging an air conditioning system

R22 systems should run a 68# to 70# suction pressue. If you look at the suction guage at 68# that is a 40 deg evaporator coil temp.

Bought a soleus air conditioner portable on and it worked great for week when drained it it has leaked ever since and not working as well to cool and sometimes gets e3 on displat

E3 error message which apparently means my air conditioneris working so well that it has internal frost. It then stops cooling the airand waits for itself to defrost. So every 5 minutes or so it would stop workingeven if the air temp was above 80 degrees. Also check one of this:
E3 Fault room sensor(s) (open or closed circuit)Code
E3Error detail Remote control transmission error (transmitting error)
Inspected unit Remote control. Hope this will help you. Good Luck.

Super hot here in the 110 area yesterday the pump just stopped running hit the high pressure reset ran about 15-20 min did it again once it cooled off in the evening no problems till today when it got...

Clean the out door coil, take a garden hose to it, and be thorough. A dirty coil can not reject the heat and will shut down. You should clean the indoor coil as well just watch that water stays out of the furnace.

AC is running but not cooling the house. It is a Payne unit. Changed the filter but didn't help.

Make sure the outside unit is working, both fan and compressor inside. If both of these are coming on and working, then your problem would more than likely be low/high refrigerant charge. You can also check the air flow inside and make sure it's blowing normal. Weak air flow can point to a dirty or clogged indoor coil which would have to be cleaned by taking the cover off of the coil, possibly moving flue vents out of the way, and taking the small cover off of the inside coil depending on if it's a upflow or downflow system. Hope this helps or at least points you in a better direction, good luck!

Ac won't go down past 78 F while operating the presures are 15/ 150 psi. I think it needs charge. But how much charge what pressure does the low side need to be at?

The temperature outside and pressure chart are needed to accurately determine the proper charge. (temperature pressure charts to calculate heat gain) However the low side of the unit should read around 70 and the high around 210. This is a really broad generalization and I do not recommend you charge your unit just on this info. It will get you close if you are using R-22 and the unit is properly cleaned. A dirty evaporator coil will cause a severe low pressure reading on the low pressure side.

Coils freezing up!

Outdoor coils dirty creats high head pressure which in turn destroys a hermetic compressor for the fact that a hermetic compressor uses Superheated vapor to cool windings..Your post is so vague but for the fact you advise a service tech...
