The screen shows an X when the navigation software on your TomTom is corrupted ... and it will not start (boot) up the device.
Have you tried contacting TomTom Support, to have them walk you through this problem ? assuming you recently bought your TomTom and it is still on warranty.

Is there a reset button? See this from PocketGPSworld.com: Reset hole The Reset hole is hard to find, you need to first remove it from the mount, turn it upside down, and within the mounting base area of GO you will see two interface slots (currently only one is being used) and towards the front of the unit on the base you will see a little hole marked reset. This is just like soft resetting a Palm or Pocket PC, it requires something small like a paperclip, and nothing was supplied with GO to enable you to easily reset the device.

SOURCE: Can not use computer voices on my tomtom 520t

On your device you may have a corrupt file that is causing the noise distortion when you use the computer voices. The solution to this is to completely remove the software from your device and reinstall it again as described in the steps below. Please ensure that you have the latest TomTom Home software installed on your computer:-

You can download and install the latest version of TomTom HOME from the following link:
http://www.tomtom.com/home

Once you have the latest version of TomTom Home installed, please follow these steps:-

STEP 1. Creating a Manual backup of your TomTom

• Charge your unit for at least two hours (preferably via the home charger)
• Perform a reset on your device (see: http://www.tomtom.com/6965 )

If you have not made a backup yet you can do so by making a manual backup of your TomTom. To do this, please look at the following web page:-

http://www.tomtom.com/3171#backup

• Connect your TomTom to the computer
• Open My Computer, you should see the TomTom as a removable drive, double click into it. (on a mac you will see the TomTom as a disk drive on your desktop)
• You will see a list of files and folders.
• Copy all of the folders on the TomTom, one by one to the backup folder. DO NOT copy the 'Loquendo' folder.
• This can take up to 1 hour to complete depending on the device.
• If you get any error messages while copying, move on to the next folder and copy that to the backup folder.
• If possible, please make a note of any error message that occur while copying the folders, and make a note of which folder causes the error message.

IMPORTANT: We advise you to follow the next steps ONLY if you have made a successful backup of your device as described in step 1. If you are unable to complete step 1, please reply back with a list of yellow folders that you have managed to successfully copy to your PC and also reply back with any error messages that you receive at this point.

STEP 2. Format the hard-disk,

• Open 'My Computer'
• Right click on the TomTom icon (the device should be seen in drive E,F,G,H,I etc) and select 'Format'.
• Do a full format by selecting FAT 32 and click on Start, do not select 'quick format'. The TomTom is now formatted.
• Disconnect the TomTom from the computer and switch it on. It will load up with a red cross on the screen.
• Reset the TomTom with a paperclip in the reset hole for 30 seconds, see http://www.tomtom.com/6965 in how to do this.
• Once Reset, switch the TomTom off, disconnect it from the computer and then switch it back on again, it will still show a red cross on the screen.

STEP 3. Restore the Folders to the TomTom

• Connect your TomTom back to the computer and make sure it is switched on
• Go to your backup folder on your desktop, double left click into it. You will see all of your backup folders.
• Copy the folders one by one to the TomTom by right clicking on the folder, select copy then open My Computer, double left click onto the TomTom drive and choose paste.
• Turn the device off (with the on/off switch) and disconnect it from the computer.
• Switch the TomTom back on.

STEP 4. Update your device

• Open TomTom Home
• Connect your device to the PC
• A list of updates should appear, if not, click on Update my Go
• Select only the program application update.
• Click on Update and Install.
• Once Installed, open TomTom Home
• Click on 'Device -> Disconnect Device'.
• Turn the device off (with the on/off switch) and disconnect it from the computer.
• Switch your TomTom On to complete the installation.

The Application is now installed, and your TomTom should now be working.

STEP 5. Run the Clear Flash Tool

• Connect your TomTom to the computer
• Close TomTom Home. (on a PC, make sure you close TomTom Home from the system tray in the bottom right hand corner of your screen by the computer clock)
• Download and run the clear flash tool from : http://www.tomtom.com/updates/clear_flash/clear_flash.exe Make sure your TomTom is connected to the computer and switched on when you do this.

• Once Installed, open TomTom Home
• Click on 'Device -> Disconnect Device'.
• Turn the device off (with the on/off switch) and disconnect it from the computer.
• Switch your TomTom On to complete the installation.

STEP 6. Install a computer voice

• Connect your TomTom to the computer
• Open TomTom Home
• Click on 'Add maps, traffic and voices -> computer voices
• select the voice of Kate and install it.

The Computer voice is now installed, and your TomTom should now be working.

SOURCE: TomTom 520 won't start

Hi all,
I got the following response to this little problem. Will try it out and hopefully my 520 will work again soon.

To ensure that your device is correctly connected to your PC, please do the following:-

STEP 1 Run the Registry Cleaner Tool

• Disconnect the TomTom and remove any USB devices from your PC, If you use a USB Hub, please disconnect that also.
• Run the RemoveRegEntries tool. You can download it from :-http://tomtom.com/lib/img/cs/S4S/files/RemoveRegEntries_TTGOv1.exe
A Black window will appear briefly then close.
• Make sure that you have got Administrator rights on the PC. Otherwise you may not be allowed to connect new hardware (especially the case when using office computers)
• Reboot your PC

STEP 2 Connect the TomTom

• Make sure the device is fully charged before connecting it to the computer. Ideally a mininum of 4 hours charge.
• Reset the device using a paper clip (see http://www.tomtom.com/6965). When resetting, keep the reset button pushed in for at least 20 seconds, but DO NOT turn the device back on just yet.
• Ensure that your TomTom has power connected to it. There should be a green light on the TomTom unit. If your device came with a Home Charger, please make sure that is plugged in to the TomTom also.
• Connect the TomTom to a USB port on the back of your PC. We strongly suggest that you use a USB 2.0 port and not a USB 1.1 Port. (USB 2.0 ports are faster USB ports, which are standard on all modern PC's, older PC's and some laptops may still use USB 1.1 ports which are slower and can prevent some USB devices from connecting properly).

STEP 3 Switch the TomTom On.

• On your PC, open My Computer
• Now switch the TomTom On while it is connected to the PC with the green light on.
• Look at My Computer, do any disk drives appear as you switch the TomTom On? If so, which drive letter is it?
• Double click on the TomTom disk.
• What files and yellow folders do you see?, please make a note of them and reply back with what files and yellow folders you see. If possible, please provide us with a screenshot showing all the details.

If the device is NOT listed as a 'Removable drive' under 'My Computer' when you switch the TomTom On, try the following:-

STEP 4 Check Device Manager

• Disconnect the TomTom from the computer.
• It is likely that you have a Firewall on your PC, in some cases, Firewalls can prevent USB devices from being recognized by the PC. We suggest configuring your Firewall and security settings to allow all USB devices to connect to your PC. Once you have done this, we suggest trying the steps above again.
• Go to 'Start' and right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'
• Select the 'Hardware' tab
• Expand 'Disk drives'. If the TomTom device is shown there with a red cross, right-click on it and select 'Enable'
• Check under 'My Computer' to see if the device now shows up as a 'Removable drive'.

We also suggest it is a good idea to try to connect your TomTom to another PC to see if you get the same problem.

SOURCE: Hi. I have a tomtom one third edition. when it

Reformatting the TomTom is really a bad idea. Many people who have done it reported that they lost their maps... and after this you don't have many options, except buying new maps.

Have you tried the RESET button on the bottom of the GPS?

I have a Tom Tom One version 2.It suddenly started switching screen views without me touching the screen, then the following day simply wont switch on.The green charging light shows when its connected to...

Theory 1: I wonder if it is due to condensation? Try warming it for a while with a hair dryer.
Theory 2: The power supply chip/ battery has died and in the process caused noise which made the screen switch.
Have you tried connecting it to your computer?

Have look through the tomtom forums but sadly I think your only option is to undo it and do some measurements starting with the battery. It's worth disconnecting and reconnecting the battery to see what happens.
Not a fix but best I can do with no further info.

My TomTom One V3 won't switch on. The green light shows it as charging but it won't power up. Tried reset as discussed with TomTom

If reset not worked, then must open up, take out battery and then reset, then you must hook up USB and upgrade software, also maybe need to get new battery too, often battery seems OK, but not,.

Last week I updated my TomTom One with the latest maps, etc. Since then whenever I use my TomTom it keeps displaying a "Shutting down in 10 seconds" screen, with follow up screens, and then it shuts down....

Make sure you have "never turn off screen" checked, To do this tap "change prferences" tap the forward arrow until you see "battery saving preferences". Tap "battery saving preferences" then tap "never turn screen off". Tap "done" and make sure that "switch off when external power is lost" is not checked. Tap "done". If you do not see this option go back into "change preferences" tap the forward arrow until you see "show menu options" it should read "show fewer munu options"

Can't find satellites

Similar problems happen to mine, but they seem to fix themselves after a while.  I've noticed that in certain areas, it will "crash," for lack of a better word, like yours, and I have to drive to a new area for it to fix itself and to locate the satellite.  I would drive to an area where you know you have always been able to access the satellite, and keep it on for a good bit of time and see if it finds the satellite.

Tomtom Go 920 failure

The power light only shows that power is getting to the TomTom. It proves nothing else and doesn't even confirm that the internal battery is charging. If you have tried a reset ( by inserting a paper clip into the reset hole at base of your TomTom and that hasn't worked then it's likely you have blown internal components . Usually caused by faulty charger. I hope the reset works ... good luck

Back light of the LCD display is not working

Get a RMA by TomTom by callinging them directly (see on TomToms webpage) I've solved by shipping my unit to Neaderland with UPS at no cost, they replaced the motherboard (not the display, this  just remained the same!) I've received the repaired 910 after 5 days and I've spent no one cent! And I've got also the battery, AC power supply and software replacement! Other problems of the software are still present: the unit won't cange colors by night-light changes (only one time after a reset...), tryes to connect to phantom computers, after a power on it get off and then on if connected on the car support,... The 910 is a crazy device, not stable at all. I think I'll change it with the new model Go930T Ciao (sorry for my bat english)
