I cannot fax with my x9350.I get a dial tone for only one second or less, then it disappears.I had the same issue yesterday and discussed with lexmark online chat support and was advised to get a new printer that mine must be defective.I did that today only to experience the same exact issue.I can fax on the same line with the same cable with a HP fax all in one machine.Brand new printer yesterday – second brand new printer today. Any idea why i cannot keep a dial tone?
Sure...check the line, with a phone..do you have call waiting or something like that enabled..that can cause some issues, with the tone interruption to the internal modem.

first, as a tech, i would make sure your phone jack works, then also make sure the line is plugged into the "line" jack on rear of fax. if those two steps are verified beyond a doubt, press your "hook" button and listen for dail tone. if none, pick up handset and listen. if you get tone on handset, then your speaker is disconnected. if you don't get a tone either way, then chances are you have a bad "NCU" board.
two things to check first, make sure the phone cord goes into the unit where it says line and not ext. The second thing to check, plug a regular phone using the same cord and see if you have a dial tone, maybe you really dont. if you need to dial an ext. # first to get a dial tone, you need to program that in.
if all that does not solve the problem, you mostly like have a bad fax board in the unit.
Check phone line. use a normal phone and plug into the same phone wall socket that the MFP is using, do we have a dial tone? Do we have a noisy line, any buzz or crackel will cause issues
If there is no dial tone ring line supplier, If it is noisy line do the same
Also check phone line is plug into "line" socket in the back of machine not "ext'
Also check no prefix is required to dial out, unit needs its own phone line..
Also try using resolution of fax as standard not fine, this requires less info to go threw the line
In Australia we have a thing called folds (fax online diag service), basicly it is a fax number you ring and the phone company who own the line send back a report, most times the issue is noisy line or no line available
It most likely is the LIU (Line Interface Unit). or you might have it plugged in the wrong port on the fax itself. Make sure it's plugged into the LINE plug. If it's the LIU it would be cheaper to replace then calling for service. Unless it's under warranty still (usually 90 days)
I'm no expert but, did you try touching the online or hook button on the fax to hear the dial tone? Or connect a basic home phone into the phone jack at the wall the fax was plugged into. Do you get a dial tone. If no dial tone, call the phone company. If there is a dial tone, its the fax.
