Gearbox doesn't come loose from the motor. my hobart is slipping in all gears. the pin securing the planetary is not broken. i've tried to remove the gearbox from the motor but it seems to be stuck. could this be related to the slipping?

After the pin is removed, place a flat-blade screw driver at opposite sides of the planetary in the small gap between it and the housing. Gently pry off the planetary.
If you cannot see the groove pin is not visible then you have one of two problems.
1 The last time the mixer was taken apart the groove pin was not put back in or not put back in correctly or all the way through the center shaft and out the other side and the pin has fallen out. I which case the planetary should be slipping, remove the trim ring and take two flat head screwdrivers and slip them between the planetary and the lower gear case and try to pry it off (Not too much pressure) because next problem;
2 The groove pin is broken off inside the center shaft, in which case you can still pry it off but with some serious problems potentially, you can break the planetary lip with the pressure of the screwdrivers or you could crack the lower gear case, either will require a part replacement order.
I have only seen one broken groove pin in years of repair and I could still get it out. It happened when someone tried to beat it in and it got bent and eventually broke. In my opinion if you cant see either end of the drive pin then there is no drive pin, try to pry the planetary off as you have seen in the internet videos. Let us know if this helped.
Short answer: something is worn/broken inside the mixer's transmission.
Longer answer:
Since none of the three gears operate, the problem is most likely on either the worm gear shaft (probably the brass worm gear itself) or the "transmission shaft" (ironic name as all three shafts could be called transmission shafts). If you're up to the task of disassembling the transmission, which is a very messy task, you'd probably find the problem on one of the two smaller shafts inside the transmission. You'll most likely find either a broken key or worn brass worm gear. Both of these items may have enough holding strength to operate under very light loads (such as an empty bowl) but slip once a load is presented. Also check the planetary key. Remove the planetary by removing two nuts on the underside of the transmission, where the attachments attach (careful, as the whole thing will drop once the second, thin nut is removed). You will find a long key on the shaft (or in the planetary gear, whichever one it sticks to). Make sure it's not broken, and re-attach the planetary.
Take the top cover off,in front of you is the brake.Turn the mixer on and you will see it spin (put it in 1st gear),stop the mixer.on the right side you will see a pin that catches the brake flange,if its worn you can replace it,if its not worn then the brake needs adjusting as it acts like a clutch.Let me know,im a hobart tech band repair these units often.
Hi, here is my opinion: 1) your planetary, or attachment hub is making the noise as it goes around, and there is grease in the gear ring that keeps it lubricated, it may be as simple as removing the planetary grease ring ( the chrome ring), and taking loose the bolt and lowering off the hub and cleaning the old grease, and installing new, reassemble in reverse. You may also have bad bearings in the shaft portion of the planetary ( the shaft your attachments go onto) allowing the shaft to "wobble" a little bit causing a slight misalignment as the smaller gear goes around while mixing. How far you want to go is up to you. For your other problem, I have seen the brass clutch bearings stick on the main shaft in the transmission, causing the planetary to momentarily speed up, or to maintain a wrong speed ( 2nd or 3rd) when set to first, but that would require full disassembly of the transmission. Best left to someone who has done it before, but if your inclined, go for it, but get a part breakdown first, or take pics as you go. Hope at least some of that helps, and thank you.
When you say lag and catch up. This may not be a issue. I have seen this with dough and a spiral hooks on all sizes of Hobarts the hook and dough get in a position to push the hook forward and the drive gears catch back up the hook. in fist gear on the 20 quart this is common for sure. but its normal. if you have a real slip from a sheared key it will not take long to where you can hold the planetary shaft with your hand and stop it. another slip that might be possible is if your mixer has the first generation worm shaft gear Assembly. when it is worn out it will slip you. this is the shaft that drives directly off the motor. you can tell if it's first Gen by it has a large spring on it. the tow later versions are all keyed to the shaft no chance to slip unless a key shears.
Michael
you have no speed 1,2,3 right?first thing to do is drop the planetary (this is the bottom with the beater shaft)undo the bolt and it will drop down.you will see 1 gear,that gear should not spin without the shaft spinning too.if it does you have a sheared key on the gear.if you have access to the transmission check the worm gear attached to the motor it has a roll pin through it make sure its not sheared.then look at the top left gear assembly and check for sheared (broken)keys.clean up all the parts,if you dont you could miss something.let me know.
