This advise is for Kenmore Elite and Whirlpool Duet front loader washers and dryers with a Control Lock problem.

This may or may not be an indication of a serious problem. In the majority of the cases, this is a simple operator error. Nearly all these model appliances have some sort of Control Lock feature on the front panel now. This is a designed safety feature that is used to prevent small children from manipulating the controls. The controls can be easily locked or unlocked by pressing and holding the following button on the front panel:

Whirlpool Duet Washer - Press and hold the END OF CYCLE SIGNAL button for 3 seconds.

Whirlpool Duet Dryer - Press and hold the END OF CYCLE SIGNAL button for 3 seconds.

Kenmore Elite Washer - Press and hold the DRAIN/SPIN button for 3 seconds.

Kenmore Elite Dryer - Press and hold the AUTO DRY LEVEL button for 3 seconds.

These instructions may not be all inclusive for all Kenmore and Whirlpool models, but they are the most common. Chances are, if you have a Control Lock feature, the instructions will be printed on the front panel adjacent to the button that is required to lock or unlock the controls.

NOTE: These instructions may also work for newer model Maytag, Hotpoint, Admiral and Fridgidaire model front loaders as well. Refer to your owner's manual or front panel for instructions pertaining to your sepcific model.

If the Control Lock feature will not lock or unlock the appliance, unplugging the unit for AT LEAST 30 minutes is recommended in order to reset the main control board. In many cases this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches.

Hopefully, this simple advice will save you an expensive service call.

SOURCE: dryer wont start

Commonproblems...blown house fuse, broken belt ( on some models )...door switch...*thermal fuse open (venting needs attention )...broken or burnt wire....timer....motor, in order from mostcommon to least common. * If you find a blown thermal fuse, always clean, change, adjust the ventingsystem and vent hood first, then it is often a good idea to replace the operatingthermostat at the same time. This is a picture of some modernthermal fuses.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Duet gew9250 - Control Lock

The most common reason for this type of complaint would be a failure in the user interface board (UI), if the portion of the board has a short circuit across the lock trails it will demonstrate this symptom.

The fix would be to have the UI replaced. Part number is
8558753 Platinum
8558755 Biscuit
8558756 Pewter

The cost for the part alone is around $160.00 plus labor to install.

I know this is not good news. sorry....

My washer has the control lock on how do I unlock it?

The Control Lock is unintentionally turned on. Press and hold the End of Cycle button until the Control Locked indicator turns off. Unplug the machine for at least 30 minutes to forcibly reset the control if the End of Cycle button does not unlock it. Replace the control if unplugging and the End of Cycle button fails to unlock it. The control can be locked by pressing and holding the same button until the Control Lock light turns on.

I was doing a load of laundry and the washer "froze" i tried to cancel the load but it wont stop.... i ended up unpluging it and even when i plugged it back in its still stuck!!!

Locking controls
The Control Lock prevents unintended use of the washer. You
can also use the control lock feature to prevent unintended cycle
or option changes during a cycle. When CONTROL LOCKED is
lit, all buttons are disabled. You can lock the washer while it is
operating.

To lock the controls
Select and hold END OF CYCLE SIGNAL for 3 seconds.
The CONTROL LOCKED status light glows.

My washer is locked. I unplugged and plugged bach

holding the end of cycle button is the control lock, not the door lock. Check to be sure that the control lock light is off--if not, hold end of cycle button again till control lock light goes off.

I've given up on the door lock after a few years fighting it, and researching. There is a solution on fix-it that may work--if it is computer(mother board I think they call it)--and not door lock mechanism. I've read many posts from duet owners that replaced door lock mechanism just to have it be a soldering problem with the "mother-board" that makes the machine "think" there is a door lock failure.

Here is link to a fix-it post I used today to get my machine open and retrive clothes it has held hostage for several days:
