When the front door glide system on the fex series dryers wears out the drum isn't held in place properly, there is enough of a gap between the bottom of the drum and the front panel for clothing to get in. As the drum rolls and the item moves to the top it becomes pinched as the gap closes leaving stains and sometimes damaged clothing.
If this is what you are talking about, Make sure it is unplugged then remove the slanted panel above the washer lid. remove the control panel (4 screws) it can be unplugged (2 plugs on left side) and laid aside (rubber line can be removed and slid out of plastic clamp.
when the control panel is removed you will find two screws holding the bottom of the front panel, these have to be removed.
there are 4 screws along the upper edge of the front panel that have to come out and then the front will come off.
Reassembly is difficult with this machine (I remove the dryer door if I'm working alone) so try to do the job when you have help.
Good Luck

My dryer is leaving brown stains on my clothes. I think that the drum needs to be aligned. Is this an easy task?

If your dryer is leaving small brown streaks on your clothes, then your drum seals need to be replaced. It is not a hard task if you know what youre doing. It is a complicated one for a beginner because you have to take your whole dryer apart to replace the seals

Brown stains in the drum of my whirlpool dryer

Apparently a common problem with 4-5 year old Kenmore and Whirlpool dryers. The paint is rubbed off the back panel by the felt seal attached to the rotating drum. The bare metal gets rusty from the damp clothes. The rust is rubbed off by the felt seal. The entire felt seal will turn brown. The stains are transfered to the clothes. The rust stains can generally be removed by additional cleaning.
I'm going to replace the felt seal on the drum, clean the rust off the back panel and see how long it lasts. Seal w/ adhesive is $30-40.
Some have suggested painting the back panel, but i don't think fresh paint is going to last long. The original paint was probably electrostatically applied and maybe baked on.

Whirlpool Duet Washer/Dryer get brown streaks on clothing

The brown stains are likely coming from the felt drum seal. The OEM adhesive is tar based - and after time and use - breaks down.

You'll need a new felt seal - and the adhesive that is used should be silicone based... eliminating the brown streaks.

Iam getting brown spots on white shorts after washing with Kenmore front loading washing machine

If it's gunk or build up the marks should wash away. In this case run a long cycle using "affresh" or "washer fresh" with an empty load and use the hottest water available to help rinse the gunk out.

If the marks do not wash away, it could be grease due to a bearing failure. Listen for loud growling or grinding either by spinning the drum by hand or putting it into a spin cycle. If this is the case, the rear tub assembly (contains bearing) will need to be replaced. Not much can be done about the ruined clothes :(

My Washing machine stains clothes; they come out with brown rusty stains. Otherwise the washing machine works fine. my washing machine is lessthen three years old and always give brown stains in white...

I had the same problem, and it turns out that it is NOT the seal. It is the liquid fabric softener. The fabric softener dispenser needs to be cleaned periodically or it gets a black waxy, goopy, build up. It is this same buildup that ends up staining your clothes with dark brown or black stains. Just remove the dispenser and wash it our very well and the problem will be gone.

Dryer is leaving brown streaks on cotton clothes

The 417 dryers have two seals on the front panel, the top seal has drum glides which wear down over time. Because the drum rests on those glides, when it wears down it leaves a gap between the drum and the seal, clothes will drag in that gap and come out with rust and/or seal adhesive stains. Try replacing the top and lower seals, this works most of the time...sometimes though, if left unattended long enough, the lack of support from the front glides causes too much strain on the rear drum bearing, and even after replacing the seals clothes may still catch, although the brown spotting will stop for awhile. You can feel the gap if you run your hand along the inside of the drum at the seal point.
