The reason I did this is so I can tune my satellite to a music station and play music through the home without having the TV on. No point of running the TV is all I want is sound.

You have to check the sound setting of your tv. In most of the lcd tv there are two option that you can select. Internal speaker of the tv and external speakers while using sound bars or other amplification devices. Fist of all Check that setting. trade your TV or Sound bar to something that is compatible. IE Make it work, No optical port find a sound bar that works with RCA, Make certin you have RCA audio outputs on your tv, if you want the sound bar than New TV
If your TV does not have a fiber optic output jack on it the sound bar will never connect to the TV. If it does then you'll need a fiber cable and then go to the audio setup on the TV and select optical out so the TV sound will be directed to the sound bar.
I suspect that the TV you have does not support the ARC function that the sound bar has. What you may have to do is use the Optical In from the sound bar to the TV and you should be good to go. You may have to change the TV's settings to use the Optical In though. So you should end up with the BluRay Player connected to the TV via an HDMI cable, the sound bar connected to the TV via the Optical In using a fiber optic cable. Hope this helps.
I had the same problem, no sound from tv to the sound bar. I hooked up the output for sound from the sound source, your cable tv box or satellite receiver and ran it to the sound bar, and then received sound.
