If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camera to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:
(Applicable for Vista Operating System Only.)
This
Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating
System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The
i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. (An i.LINK is a
black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of cable to be used
will depend on the i.LINK port of your Computer. The Sony Camcorder
will have the 4 pin i.LINK cable and if the computer has the 6 pin
i.LINK port, then you may have to use the 4 pin to 6 pin i.LINK Cable).
You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Computer.
Refer this link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

As the Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it is not
required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video to the
Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to
transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the
i.LINK/Firewire interface.
Applicable for Windows XP Operating System:
If you are using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install the USB Streaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software disk with the Computer.
Check this link for the instruction to transfer video to a Computer using USB Streaming.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Describe the steps you've already taken to try to resolve the problem
I have a Sony DCR-TRV285E Digital-8 Digital Camcorder. I tried to transfered video from the handycam to PC. But, one full cassette of 1 hour was broken into 6 clips of 10 minutes each. Also, the file size is very large, about 15 gb in all. How do I get it as a single file with less size, say 1gb for 1 hour video.
Dear Guest: Thank you for your response.
I used the USB cable and followed instruction which appeared on the screen (I was transfering video using sony picture package). After 10 minutes it was asking do you want to continue. When I selected yes, the 10 minute video was saved as file and it continued till I have 6 different files of large sizes.
when ever i start capturing video on my PC (xp) then after evry 10minutes it asks me to cont or not so in that the video is saved in my PC in clips of 10-10 minutes with very gig sizez near about 15 GB for a full cassete. So how can i minimize it or
can i use AV cable to copy the video on my PC without any caputring card
