It sounds like the circulating fan is wearing out. The fan circulates air thru the freezer as well as the refrigerator. When it starts to wear out the force is reduce to a point that the freezer will get cold but the refrigerator will not get cool. The minimum cost of the assemble is around $300.00

Whirlpool top freezer 18c.ft w/ icemaker: freezer works fine. fridge does not cool below 56 degrees. vacuumed dust from bottom, turned entire unit off and restarted but still not working, in back of

i think you have to check to make sure that
the fan inside the freezer is cycling on.
it will be concealed of course but you should
be able to hear it. i replaced one once with
the same symptoms and that fixed fridge
portion of a 2002 or 3 whirlpool. make sure
to listen closely and not mistake it for the
stronger fan motor which operates in
conjunction with and nearby the compressor.

Frost build up

Hi

Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils or a condenser that is clogged with dust, lint, and dirt. Determine the temperature setting. The refrigerator should be set to temperatures ranging from 34 degrees to 40 degrees, while the freezer should be below 30 degrees. Adjust the temperature setting which will naturally improve the ice buildup that's been caused by the wrong temperature setting.

Move the refrigerator away from the wall. Oftentimes, this simple action is all that is needed because the unit is not getting enough air circulation behind it. Also, some refrigerators have vents underneath the unit, which are easily clogged with debris. Clean these vents and coils.

Remove food and shelving from the refrigerator and freezer portions of the fridge. If ice build up is happening in the freezer, the drain in the freezer may be clogged. With the unit off, remove coverings to expose drain and pour hot water down the drain hole until it comes out into the drain drip pan under the fridge.

Check the condenser coils. The evaporator coils could be causing the problem of ice build up. If this is the case, professional repair is likely needed to replace the motor, thermostat or other problems within the fridge.

Refrigerator doesn't get colder than 55 degrees.

Its defrost problem, the freezer should cool, then freeze, then defrost cycle should start. In your case freezer is cooling, then freezing, but its not defrosting. That's why fridge section is not cooling.-------

Refrigerator not working, freezer works great

Yes, only one compressor. The refrigeration system actually only cools the freezer. Then there is a vent from the freezer to the refrigerator that allows the cold air to circulate to the refrigerator side. That little dial you turn to set the refrigerator temperature is actually only open or closing that vent. The dial for the freezer temperature is an actual thermostat that operates the compressor.

The temperature of the freezer should be between 0 and -10 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is in or near this range and the refrigerator is only at 55 degrees (the refrig should be at 38 to 45 degrees) then check for blockage or icing where the air from the freezer circulates into the refrigerator.

If the freezer is not in or near the 0 to -10 degrees then you have a refrigeration problem. First thing to do is clean the condenser coil on the bottom of the unit using rags and a shop-vac. Be careful of the wiring and tubing down there plus the sharp metal.
Unplug the unit before cleaning.

Otherwise, you'll need to call a refrigerator service technician to repair the refrigeration system for you.

If this helps you, please select YES to one of the first two ratings questions. Thank you, and Good Luck.

My Ge Monogram Refrigerator required maintenance cleaning on the condenser, typical with this type of built-in system. blew out the dust and cleaned it. the freezer is working fine but the refrigerator...

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Burnt smell inside freezer.

Generally speaking it is the refrigerator control that controls the compressor operation. Refrigerator is cooled by air from the freezer. When the refrigerator gets down to its designed temperature it shuts off the compressor. The freezer control determines how much air is allowed to flow into the refrigerator section and there-by controls the freezer temperature.
