Candace, while not familiar with the 4.2, I've had thread jams on my trusty old Pfaff. I hope this helps!

If you are able to totally remove the bobbin cover/stitch plate, please do so. Ideally, there will be one or two screws holding it in place.

remove the bobbin

carefully inspect the bobbin housing; thread likes to hide behind the housing. If you find some thread, use a tweezers to remove it.

If no thread is found, see if there are one or two screws holding the bobbin holder/raceway in place, or just a lever. Try to remove the bobbin holder, carefully noting what the orientation is of all pieces is (using a cellphone to capture pictures of before and after is great!).

Clear any threads from the raceway, carefully re-assemble everything, test and good luck!!!

Some sergers have a threading guide inside the door on the front of the machine.

If you need a manual, please provide the brand & model.

SOURCE: Pfaff quilt expressions 4.0 shows

A lot of these Ex 4.0 have defective cutter motors. The arm that the cutter is attached to passes by a sensor that tells the machine when the cutter is at the rest position. And what is happening is that the arm is no longer in place to tell the sensor where it is, and it stops short of the rest position. This part is covered by PFAFF for a 5 year period. You'll just have to have a PFAFF dealer install it and pay a labor charge.

SOURCE: Message remove thread jam under the stitch plate keeps appearing! It's clean!

After cleaning out the bobbin area, re-threading the top thread, turning my Pfaff 4.2 off and on it still said " remove thread jam under the the stitch plate". I pushed the "ok" button and it started working again.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

Not sure what the problem is but you might try this:

Remove the top thread completely from the machine.
Make sure the machine is cleaned under the needle plate, the hook/bobbin area, the feed dogs, etc.
If your manual instructs oiling, do so as described.
Confirm that the feed dogs are in the raised position.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot then rethread the top thread from the beginning.
Verify the thread path is correct.
Confirm the needle is installed correctly (does the flat part face the right direction?). Is it the right needle for your machine.
Set the top tension to the midway point.
Check that the stitch length is set to at least #2.
Re-test your machine. Tweak the top tension until the top and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

Some machines have a presser foot pressure adjustment that increases or decreases the amount of pressure the presser foot applies to the fabric and the feed dogs. You may need to increase this pressure.

The first few stitches are just fine but then the machine seems to seize up and stops. When I try to remove the fabric I can barely lift it and then I must cut through a veritable bird's nest of threads on...

You may have a jam under the needle plate. Take it off and have a look.
It is often a simple case of one of the threads not passing through the tension discs correctly. Try re-threading upper and lower, making sure the presser foot is up at the time.

Are you sewing a fine material? Sometimes fine fabric gets pushed down through the universal needle plate hole which is slightly elongated. If this is the case you need a straight stitch needle plate. You cannot do zig zig or anything other than straight stitch with this plate.

If re-threading does not do it and you do have a soft fabric, try popping some freezer paper or similar under the first few centimeters of sewing before buying another needle plate, it might work.

Tension Problem on Pfaff 2034, bobbin loops

Rule of thumb.. Loops on the bottom, problem on the top. Loops on the top, problems on the bottom.

Set your upper tension at 4, and rethread the machine from the top. Just before you thread the needle, but the presser foot down. If the thread pulls right thru easily, then the thread is not thru the tension wheel right. Because, if you can't pull the thread thru with the presser foot down, you have it threaded right.
