There is a RESET button on the back of your TOMTOM. If you press this button it will reset all settings to factory. It will also erase all of your settings. You will have to reprogram it just like when you first bought it but set up is fairly simple so it shouldn't be a problem.
Go to TOM TOM´s homepage http://www.tomtom.com/services/ Connect the GPS unit to the PC using the USB2 connection. You will be given the possibility to restore the unit´s files. This takes a while, but it solved the problem for me.
Tap "Reset factory settings" button to restore the factory settings to your TomTom XL. All your settings, including Favourites, your Home location, warnings for POIs and any Itineraries you have created are deleted.
Tap "Set Clock" button to select the type of clock that is shown and set the time.
