Hi , appears to be activated ( and I presume deactivated ) within " system setup " of on-screen display ( config menu)
You did not note display model . I consulted the model VS197-- series manual
You may have seen this answer before on the sony support page and tried it with no luck, but the following DOES work. The trick is that you have to do it for a LONG TIME (I didn't time it, but it was maybe twenty seconds or so):
Hold down the EJECT and POWER buttons on the dvd player simultaneously, until you see a message that says DEMO MODE OFF (or something similar to that - I forgot to write the exact message down). When you see that message, let go of the buttons, and the tray will eject/open. Again, the trick is that you have to hold both buttons down until you see the message appear on the screen.

click on menuclick on the down arrow button,so that you can see the system setup
click menu to highlight the "splendid demo mode"
click menu again ,and move the arrow button,so that the OFF is selected
and finally exit out for menu
press menu press down arrow button (until you see System Setup) press menu to highlight 'splendor demo mode' press menu again and you see On/Off press down arrow until OFF is highlighted then press the try me button (leftmost) twice to turn off menu
