I have a murray 46256x92a mower. It is a three blade 46 cut with a Briggs 18 hp horizontal twin motor. I recently replace the mandrel and mandrel housing for the center blade and I reinstalled the deck but the belt does not tighten completely when the blade drive lever is engaged. The mower deck diagram is available at - http://www.searspartsdirect.com/murray-riding-mower-tractor-parts/model-46256X9A/0739/1509200/WL000420/00006.html - Basically when you engage the belt drive, the pulley identified as #25 rotates into position to take up the slack in the belt. But it doesn't go all the way and some slack remains. If I push the pulley further, it does seem to correctly tighten the belt but does not stay there. The pics I took from the other side of the deck - http://s626.photobucket.com/user/335ownrtx/library/mower show the one spring correctly mounted #53 in diagram. But I don't see where spring #31 should go. There are no holes in the tensioner arm that I Can tell. When I pulled the deck out, I did find two broke springs. They would appear to be #31 and #14 but with regard to #14, there is no place to mount it either and I don't think that belt even has a tensioner assembly. I think I found the right spring on ebay can anyone offer any suggestions here?

The fact is that belts don't stretch. They wear down on the sides, causing them to ride deeper in the pulleys and they APPEAR to be longer. Check belt "width" to see if it is less than one half inch. Most craftsman riders use half-inch (AKA: "A section") belts.

That model number des not show up as a good number on the http://www.searspartsdirect.com site. Are you sure you have the belts on correctly? If it has 2 belts on the deck & 1 is not installed correctly they work against each other. Safely make sure that each blade will turn by hand. did you take the blades off? If they are too long by just a fraction, they will hit ach other, but that usually makes quiet a noise. Get your book out & systematically go over everything you touched or changed. It sounds like something really simple you have overlooked. you can go to http://www.searspartsdirect.com & enter a good model number & view all of the parts diagrams. Sometimes they are a big help, & at other times they just confuse you more:). Let me know what you find!!

I believe that tensioner pully has to be loosend up and moved. Place the deck in the lowest position using the hydraulic piston (if applicable) or the manual cutting-height adjuster. Remove the deck-to-PTO belt from the PTO by releasing tension on the idler-arm pulley. This is a spring-loaded handle that turns in only one direction by hand and relieves the tension on the belt. Slip the deck-to-PTO belt off the PTO pulley after the tension is relieved. Remove the deck from underneath the mower or tractor. Locate any belt stops and loosen them with the ratchet wrench and proper socket. Belt stops are located on the deck and are the small metal brackets that guide and secure the belt to the pulleys so it will not jump off when under heavy use, or stretch from normal wear. Remove any pulley covers by removing the retaining screws using the ratchet wrench and a socket. Loosen the idler-pulley retaining bolt (located on the underside of the mower deck) to replace the deck-to-PTO belt. Removing the bolt is not necessary. Loosen the pulley enough to wiggle the belt free from the pulley and remove and replace the belt. Remove any arbor covers (if applicable) that conceal the arbor pulleys by removing the retaining screws with the ratchet wrench and a socket to replace the mower arbor belt. Locate the tensioner pulley on the mower arbor belt to replace it. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt enough to slide it and release tension from the belt. Remove the belt from the arbor pulleys and replace it. Slide the tensioner pulley back leaving about 1/2-inch of play in the belt and tighten the bolt. Reverse the procedure to put the rest of the mower deck back together and reinstall on the mower or tractor.

Well, I went by the local sears parts/repair shop and got to talk to one of the repair guys. He basically said the mounting hole is under the pulley. So the pulley will have to be removed to gain access to it. And considering how tight the spring appears to have to stretch, I will probably have to pull the deck back out to mount it :-/
