These sound like unrelated problems. Uninstall the hard drive, and test if the printer light goes on.
Make sure the printer is connected properly, make sure the power cord is connected snuggly.
5 flashes indicates a faulty printhead or possibly a problem with the p/head contacts. Try removing the head which is easier if you take the cartridges out first(no tools required) and re-seat it having checked the contacts for dirt.

6A00 means the purge unit is stuck, it's the unit on the right that cleans the printhead. If you can see on the right, look for any paper scraps or things that don't belong. Otherwise it's a shop repair.
I have a pixma too, they are getting old, but as long as they still work who cares? Mine started to print green tinted pictures lately, now I'm searching boards and looking for the solution to that. I put in a service request to canon usa, but haven't heard from them yet, maybe never will. Long Live PIXMA's !
