Repair shop says it's something with the computer or instrument cluster. They don't see any problems with the engine or cooling system. The problem comes and goes.
Instruments cluster problems are a documented long-term problem with the 2000-2009 Impalas (actually many GM models). GM is hesitant to acknowledge this since it get too costly, and since the problems usual only surface well after the warranty periods have expired. If you do a really goo d job of researching the history of the problems and shame your local dealer's service department, you might get some financial relief in the form of a discount on parts or labor.
Testimonial: "The problem just started Monday the 16th. So there's no alternative to the dealer. ugh. Thanks :)"
Most local mechanics are not equipped to handle these instrument panel problems. There is a small percentage of repair shops knwn as AUTO ELECTRIC shops. These folks specialize in the electrical systems, data systems, and wiring of vehicles. They are better trained and equipped than the local mechanics to repair your issue and are usually cheaper than dealers. The hard part is to first find one and then find one that you can verify is trustworthy. There are much fewer and further between than the local PEP BOYS. I wish there was a happier answer. The truth is GM should have stepped up and taken it in the chin for theis bad design and fixed it. What will probably happen is that they will repalace the instrument cluster with a refurb unit. They tend to work better for some reason.
