How many kilobytes are in one terabyte?

1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte
1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte
1024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte
1024 gigabytes = 1 terabyte

1024^4 = 1,099,511,627,776 (approximately 1 trillion bytes)

My HDD Dell 300GB 15K 3.5" SAS, i used with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. The problem after installing the hdd total capacity its 279 How can manage this? Thank you

Hard drive manufacturers market drives in terms of decimal (base 10) capacity. In decimal notation, one megabyte (MB) is equal to 1,000,000 bytes, one gigabyte (GB) is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes, and one terabyte (TB) is equal to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes.

Programs such as FDISK, system BIOS, Windows, and MacOS use the binary (base 2) numbering system. In the binary numbering system, one megabyte is equal to 1,048,576 bytes, one gigabyte is equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes, and one terabyte is equal to 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

Simply put, decimal and binary translates to the same amount of storage capacity. Let's say you wanted to measure the distance from point A to point B. The distance from A to B is 1 kilometer or .621 miles. It is the same distance, but it is reported differently due to the measurement.

Capacity Calculation Formula

Decimal capacity / 1,048,576 = Binary MB capacity
Decimal capacity / 1,073,741,824 = Binary GB capacity
Decimal capacity / 1,099,511,627,776 = Decimal TB capacity

Example:
A 500 GB hard drive is approximately 500,000,000,000 bytes (500 x 1,000,000,000).

500,000,000,000 / 1,048,576 = 476,837 megabytes (MB) = 465 gigabytes (GB)

I have 5gb free on my modem .how much kb or mb is one gb

First, the modem is not the computer. It's what connects the computer to your Internet Service Provider. You're asking how much free space is on your hard drive, which is the storage device in the computer. It's like a filing cabinet where programs and data are stored until you tell the computer to run them.

The basic storage unit is the byte, which you can imagine as storing one character. The prefixes kilo-, mega- and giga- are from the metric system:

1 kilobyte (KB) = 1000 bytes (It's actually 1024 bytes because computers work in powers of two)
1 megabyte (MB) = 1000 KB
1 gigabyte (GB) = 1000 MB

So if your drive has 5GB free, there is about 5000 megabytes left to work with, roughly 5,000,000,000 bytes.

Capactiy of external hardrive

That's normal. Storage manufacturers consider 1 GB at 1 billion bytes (1,000,000,000 bytes).

Computers, however, use base-2 arithmetic, and one kilobyte is 1024 bytes, one megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and one gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. This all multiples to 1 gigabyte according to the computer is 1024^3 or 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Take 320,000,000,000 and divide it by 1,073,741,824 and you get 298.023223876953125, so your computer says your "320GB" drive is 298GB.

There's a standard for base-2 (binary) measurement terminology (gibibytes, mebibytes, kibibytes, etc), but few people seem to use it.
