No, the D50 will not (as you've discovered) accept an SDHC memory card (anything bigger than 2gb is SDHC). I haven't found a firmware upgrade for the D50 to rectify this issue, either. I own a D50 also, and love it, but bigger cards would be nice.

What does CHA mean

Nikon says this about CHA:

When a Memory card is inserted into a D-SLR camera, the camera checks the card for compatibility and usability. There are three possible results of the test:

1) Camera detects valid Memory card, displays number of remaining images in top LCD

2) Camera displays "FOR" in top control panel LCD. The camera has detected a valid disk partition map, but was unable to read the first sector of the Memory Card. Formatting the memory Card using the cameras format option, should resolve this condition and allow the Memory card to be used.

3) Camera displays "CHA" in top LCD. The camera has detected an invalid partition type or is not working properly. Reformatting the memory card may allow it to be used. If an approved memory card causes the camera to display the "CHA" indicator contact the memory cards manufacturer for assistance.

(Nikon's list of "approved" memory cards can be found here.)

Please note that the default disk format used in Windows XP is FAT32 and if a card is formatted with this setting on an XP system, a D1 series camera will report "CHA". Reformat the card as "FAT" to use in the D1 series camera.

When the CHA error is shown, typically the camera will freeze and require that the battery be removed from the camera before it can take another picture. After that picture has been taken, the camera freezes up again for many owners.

Some owners have success removing and either re-seating or inserting a new memory card in the camera.

Some owners have success clearing the error by removing the lens and then reinstalling.

The key to these "fixes" is that they don't all work for everyone. You might need to return the camera to Nikon for repair. You can arrange for Nikon service here.

Took the memory card out of my camera yesterday. when i put it back in it displays CHA on the screen. what happened? i can't use my camera.

The CHA error indicates an issue with the memory card in the camera.

Try another card and see if that works ok.

Also, always format cards in the camera.

In case the error comes back on a new card, you will need to send the camera to Nikon.

I will appreciate your feedback and positive rating for this free solution.

Nikon D50 Digital Camera. I cannot take a picture, the letters CHA are flashing on the screen.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

If that doesn't do it, try a different card.

Cha flashing when new memory card inserted... have tried several to no avail... please can you help?

CH A error indicates that the camera can not communicate with the memory card. Most often this is caused by formatting a memory card in a computer and then putting it into the camera. (Especially on 4 + gb cards). Solution is 1. Reset the camera - then it should work with cards that it worked with in the past. 2. Take the bad memory card and reformat it in your computer to FAT not FAT 32.

It should now work - although it will show capacity to be only 2 gb...

I believe at that point, if you reformat it in camera it will work at the full 4 gb.

Memory card

I experienced the same problem with my Kodak C330. I took it to Walgreens and the tech stated that the C330 was created before 2 GB memory cards were invented; therefore, the software inside it doesn't recognize a larger GB capacity. In short, the C330 has a 1GB max capacity. Considering you can take 1200 pictures with a 1GB card, a larger size really isn't necessary.

New 2 gig XD care will not format

Hi Bill...... It won't take a 2gb card. In fact I have a feeling that it may not even take a 1gb card. I have mine as a back-up camera these days. It will not support Panasonic either. Sorry..from experience.

Oh.... a quick tip... the Camedia software is not too hot, and you have to pay for the update to give you the email connection.

2 gb memory card displays "full" with only 8 pictures

Samsung only guarantees that a 1GB external memory card will work. If you look at the user manual on page 77. I just used a 1GB memory card instead and it worked fine.
I am not saying that no memory cards greater than 1GB will work, but if it doesn't work or stops working then it is because the software for the phone is not set up to handle it. I had the same issue and had to switch to a 1GB card.

Nikon D70 won't recognize the 2 GB, type II memory card

Try to clean the contacts of the memory cards and, mostly, of the memory card bay of the camera. Use a dry anti-static fabric (e.g. what we use to clean eye-glasses). DON'T use any liquid cleaner of anything like that!
