When the lid is closed, on the bottom half of the laptop on the right is a slot. Whatever is that slot for? There's something in it that keeps coming out.

There is a switch..(interlock) that activates when the lid is open or closed...not allowing the unit to go into spin if the lid is open. It may be that the machine thinks the lid is open. The switch could be dirty or broken or loose. There is a little leg sticking out from the underside of the lid, that goes into a slot on the machine when the lid is closed, that activates the switch. Make sure this all looks good, (no obstructions or debris in the slot) and the leg goes all the way into the slot (lid closes all the way).
You should see a little plastic lever in the slot that the leg on the lid will contact when you close it. If it is there and unobstructed, try gently pushing down on with your finger or the back of a pencil or something, until you hear a faint click (switch). It should spring back into position when you release. Its a quick and easy check. Good luck.
The most common reason for this problem is the Lid Switch. If the lid is not closed, washer will not go into extract (drain) & then spin cycles. Check the lid to see if the plastic piece that pushes the switch down is broken off. You can simulate "Lid Down" condition by depressing switch with a screwdriver. It's located on the right side of the wash drum / tub. There is an oval slot there & you should hear & feel a click when pressed down. Look directly above that slot on the lid bottom for the plastic piece that is commonly broken off. If it is, you can apply a temporary fix by wedging something in the slot to depress switch while you order a replacement part. *****WARNING***** Operating washer with this interlock defeated can cause severe injury! Washer will continue to spin with the lid up! You should use this technique for troubleshooting purposes ONLY! Please reply if this is NOT your problem and I'll post other causes & solutions for you.
Yes. If it is laying flat on top with nothing on the grill, you should be able to raise it directly up maybe about a 1/2" or so. This is to all the lid to rest squarely on whatever you're cooking. You'll notice the hinge has slots to let the lid raise up and down keeping it parallel with the bottom.
Why would you want to remove the on/off switch board? I've never seen one fail - including the lid-close switch on it. Short answer is: all the screws at the bottom, 2 in the back, 2 underneath the keyboard cover strip, and 3 underneath the keyboard - in other words, you have to separate the top half of the laptop from the bottom half of the laptop to get to it.
If you're having problems with LCD lighting (on/off imtermittently), it's the LCD inverter that needs to be replaced.
There are 3 parts to standby. Your version of windows must support it. You have the utility enabled and working. The display switch must be operating.
If you have checked the power utility setting and are sure they are right and the utility is installed operating right then your problem is the lid switch.
On some models you can see it under or along the bottom edge of the screen. To check if it is working use something like a tooth pick to depress the switch. The display should at least blink out when fully closed. If you can't find it or get at it you can close the display and try to spot any light coming from the screen. It should be easy to see but if nothing else try a dark room. The display should go dark as the lid closes fully. It will be pretty close to when its down so can be hard to see when.
If the display is working after you close then the switch needs replacement. If it goes dark then I would reinstall the power utility as something may have got corrupted.
is there any build up any where aound the hinge? Rub a bit of butter on hinge then move lid up & down. this is kind of like oiling something but your using butter or margerine. I do this on the hinges of my doors when they start to squeek.
k the only thing you can do is try starting then stopping each drawer to see if the lid will go back up if not it will even be a hard one for the serviceman. you can't swap the wires like you've done it will cause large problems like a jammed lid sorry.
I have seen this problem with this series of printer. (all the ones shaped like this ie. 5150) The lid will not close all the way on the right side (this is where the lid triggers the door open/close sensor flag). Somehow the sensor flag gets out of alignment over time where the top can't close properly to trigger it. The simplest solution is take something and wedge it where the tab from the lid would come down and make contact with this sensor flag. Print with the lid open or set the lid down on whatever you use to trigger the sensor flag. Hint: when testing and problem solving in house, I use a small piece of paper folded up several times to trigger door open/closed sensors that way I can watch the printing process and diagnose problems.
Well.. you'd still have to open the lid to turn it on, right? (because you didn't mention the model of your laptop, I don't know where the power button actually *is*)
You want to close it while it's on, without it hibernating or going to sleep...
Go to your control panel, then into power or power management (depending on your Windows version, because you didn't mention it)
Then have a look under the "advanced" tab where it asks "when I close the lid of my computer". Set that to "do nothing".
Now when you close the lid, the laptop screen should turn off, but the PC should keep running. I'm not sure if that will still turn your external monitor off though.
I think that is your best solution, other than hacking off the little button that senses when the lid is closed. =-]
